Hi All,

I am about to embark on owning my own stables and land, I currently am on a livery basis.

I would be interested to hear people's views about the manure, the horses will continue to be on shavings for the bedding. Where I am currently they pay for someone to take the waste straight from the trailer and they have said they don't run a two heap basis and spread the composted heap back on the land because it ruins it.

Does anyone else run two heaps and spread the circa year old manure back on their fields? Is it really not advised?

Thanks,

Kevin

The issue is the shavings, that will take the nitrates from the soil so spreading it is counterproductive, I think a year isn't deemed long enough for them to rot down enough to not cause this, more like 2-3 are needed.

Okay thanks, so if I have enough space I would probably need 4 piles. 1 current, 1 up to a year, another up to 2 years, and the last one up to three years.

How much space do you think each pile will take? I will probably look at putting the piles on some hard standing area if it is feasible.

how much space depends on how many horses you have. More than you think if our two are anything to go by! we have a 10x10x 2mish deep pit they probably fill that 6+ times over the year easily, they are only stabled winter months and we only muck out the wet on weekends.

Yeah I guess it mounts up. It is two and one pony. I think they have got used to the comfortable life so would be stabled all year round with turnout as much as possible.

I wonder if there is something in between straw and shavings which would decompose quicker?

Yes there are loads of short chopped fibre bedding that decompose better and more suited to spreading on the land - hemp/flax/miscanthus/elephant grass - you just need to avoid wood products.

Hello Kevin
I run a Facebook group called “land management for horses uk” . Feel free to ask to join and I will let you in. I discuss methods of composting “black gold” on there in detail and have some links that,I hope, may prove useful to you. I would also recommend in the first instance a YouTube video, called “regenerative solutions for pasture management”.if anyone else would like to join, send me a message on here first, so I can see who you are. Thanks.

No problem Kevin, after watching the first vid, then watch “composting for horse properties”. Also to be found on YouTube or my group. Ask any questions on the group and I will be happy to answer them

Thanks for the links, you have already processed my request.

Is there anyone that sells the 100L active aeration systems in the UK?
