A couple of afternoons ago my friend volunteered to do a bit a bit of massage on my horse. Said horse is my aged but volatile arab. He was in quite a strop that afteernoon, having been tied up in the yard for a whole...ooh.....20 minutes or so (did I say he's volatile?) and he was quite avid to get back to the herd. Cue lots of head tossing and generally throwing himself about when my friend started on him. He gradually quietened down as she started to work over him. She came to a sore spot just behind his poll, and as she was working on that he turned his head slightly and looked at me. He just kept staring hard at me, and he did so I started to get the strangest sensation in my solar plexus.

Hard to describe....it was a sort of deep warm hollow feeling. It wasn't unpleasant but it was very strange, it amost made me want to cry, um, but not in a sad way. It was really intense, as was my horse's gaze, it was as though we couldn't take our eyes off each other, and it went on for a good 5 minutes.

So what was that all about? Anyone know?

there is something a bit bizarre about massage - I have a friend that cries if she has it on herself. Personally it makes me feel really sick and needing to sit down - chiro said it happens quite often when people are holding their horses.

This is called a healing crisis. Massage helps flush toxins out of the system so the healing crisis is brought on because of a rapid detoxification.

I suggest more massage therapy :D

From a shiatsu massage perspective, there are quite a few points around that area where meridians - channels of energy - pass through. These channels are the primary route for energy - but in fact the energy is all around and projects out too - and they can get blocked, either by tightness in a joint or through other causes that are physical and also more emotionial.

I know I can sometimes project my energy and influence a horse - for example there was one time while I was training on a beautiful evening when I was working on a horse, and I couldn't quite remember the route of the meridian. From about 4 feet away I pointed with my finger what the route was. As I did so the horse totally zoned out and its head almost hit the floor. It was an amazing experience.

Therefore I see no reason why a horse's energy cannot get projected out too. If the massage helped clear tightness and allow energy - or from a practical perspective blood, oxygen and nutrients - to flow again, then it is not unimaginable to think the horse felt relief, which was projected on to you.

Does that make sense?

Beckyboodle, yes, it does make a lot of sense..and I'm going to look into this a bit more. I did wonder if happened because the horse and I know each other so well, he's been with me for 13 years and we've been through thick and thin together and are quite tuned in. I'd be interested to be with my friend when she massages a horse that I don't know. Wonder if I'd feel the same reaction?
