The last couple of days my TB has been a bit tetchy when grooming and started swishing his tale a bit in the stable and it looks like he’s been biting his sides/bum and assumed it could be fly/midge irritation (they go out on the evening and there’s a pond nearby). Around the same time I’ve found bites on my back and tummy so assuming whatever’s biting me is biting him. My other horse who is stabled next door and turned out same time seems completely normal.

He has moulted in but I’ve seen other posts similar saying it’s just Cos of the weird weather.

Pic included of him and of the bites on me. They’re only on my back tummy and upper arm/shoulders - all areas which are covered by clothes when I’m at yard.

I also keep other animals but assuming it must be horse related!

Really need to trace it so I can fix it haha. Never had these bites before despite being around horses my whole life

Ohhh that looks nasty!

I wonder, have you done anything differently within the last few days? For both you and/or your horse?? i.e. moved fields to somewhere a bit more nearer water/marshy ground, or whatever?

For your horse, I'd be inclined to bung on a fly rug and see if that helps.

For yourself, if you've got any anti-hist's in the house, I'd suggest that might help you.

The weather this winter and spring has been just weird!

Could be weevils in the straw or hay. You do feel them bite...like tiny little pin-prick burn sensation, rather than being itchy much after theyve bitten. Theyre only just visible by eye on the bales. Tiny milk white things crawling around. You have to super-focus to see them.
weird how theyre on your back.....i got them on my face, neck, chest when moving big round bales of hay by hand. Did you lean against a stack of hay or straw?

Nothings changed horsewise - they can get to within about 20m of the pond (fenced off) but are usually right down the other end of the field. Although when I catch in they tend to run up to the gate so I don't think any flies around the pond would get me since I don't go down there. Everyone else on the yard is fine and we share straw, I have a hay bale to myself though as they're on haylage so it might be the hay. I'll have to have a look in the hay tonight! I make sure I don't swing haynets over my back anymore to carry round to stables. Hopefully it'll all just clear up when I get my new bale. The bites dont particulary bother me but do get a little itchy at times, so I'd not want the horses to have the same problems. If it's not from a bale I'm stumped!
