I bought a lovely TB ex-racehorse 6 weeks ago. She had been turned out over winter, so was in pretty poor condition when I got her - slowly improving. She is turning out to be an absolute star, however a couple of weeks ago, she started tossing her head - not shaking it, and when I had a lesson the other day, she was a pig - really throwing it up and then ducking behind the bridle. My instructor noticed that she had snot coming down just one nostril - the right one - she was doing the head tossing on the right rein. When I put her back in her box, we noticed that her jaw had swollen on the right side and also underneath her jaw - that little lump that they have half way down - was much bigger than the other side. I have booked her in at the vets on Wednesday. Could it be an abscess/fractured tooth, and would this have caused the head tossing/right rein stiffness?? She was much better on the left rein. Your expert answers would be appreciated! Thanks

Thanks Pauline. I spoke to the vet on the phone and as she is still eating etc ok, he thinks she can wait til Weds. I am taking her to see a vet who specialises in equine dentistry as well, so hopefully he can sort it. If it is an abscess I will have to get the tooth taken out as I know that the antibiotics will only hold it at bay for so long.....
