I have just been to a meeting. All not horsey

Anyway a friends horse was pts today. She was elderly and it was on the cards. She has had a fantastic life but the end had come naturally and it was done sympatheticly. The people were screaming about it being murdered. The poor horse could not get up. Now i do have strong views but the time was right. I was totally shocked. They expected the horse to be left laying down to die slowly

The poor horse could not be moved somewhere private. She died in her home for the past few years amongst friends. The people did not have to look.
Just had to get it out. I thought it an odd view.

Sorry to hear about the horse and the ridiculous reaction to it being humanely put to sleep.
Unfortunately, in my opinion, there are far too many 'must be kept alive at all costs' people in this country.

townies that have moved to the country by any chance??

!!Idiots whoever they were!Sorry for your friends loss, hard enough without comments like that!

It was actually. They don't have a clue. I did not know about it until they told me. The owner is a private person and would have wanted to be alone and tell me when she was ready.
I was trying not to cry when they ranted as it was new news to me and i have known owner and horse many years. She had warned me the time was drawing near. I hope it is not repeated to reach her ears. She acts 'cannot be hurt, no feelings' but she was heartbroken i heard.
I was realy shocked at the attitude. I am one for retireing. The horse had had a happy long retirement but the end had come. They cannot be left to starve to death because they cannot get up.
I was going to text owner but then thought i will wait for her to contact me. We all grieve in our own way.

Who were they? Didn't they understand euthanasia?

Its people from out of town that bought houses opposite a common. They hate trees, bushes, grasses and animals

Why they live where they do i will never understand. They obviously do not understand the e word i cannot spell. They would have complained if they had to see the horse slowly die. If there is ever a right time that was it, but it was still a shock, and to be told 'A horse was murderd today' was a bigger shock.
Strange as it happened as the debate earlier today was ongoing.

Oh god - I'm all for not PTS if the horse is happy and can wander round a paddock/munch grass/live peacefully. But with an elderly horse whose end was coming naturally - it is an act of mercy to PTS humanely - I would also have been a little shocked by these reactions

So sorry for your friend.

Do any of these people keep pets, and have had to take vet's advice to PTS a cat or dog? Just becasue they can pick it up and carry it to a surgery, it may be admitted to vet hospital and it is neat and clinical and tidy, it's the same outcome. But you can't do that with an elderly horse.

I would probably confront them with this truth and ask them to show a little more consideration for the grieving owner.

And do any of them eat meat, chicken or fish? What on earth do they think happens to get non-veg food on to their table? Far better to live a good life and die a dignified death without too much suffering. They are ignorant of the way life works.

Knowing me i will when it has sunk in. It was such a shock and so much was going through my mind. I will have to take a walk on the common for it to sink in and i know people will come running. They will hear the other side of it. The owner was so brave, its not an easy decision no matter how ready the horse is. I don't know how it will come out when it has sunk in

Sadly, horses do not lie down and die peaceful deaths. Luckily, we as compassionate horse owners and lovers have the option of making sure their passing is handled with kindness and they are among people that love them. To non-horse owners, this is hard to comprehend. In my 30 years of owning horses, I have been lucky that I have only had 4 PTS. All were PTS at home and hand on heart, I know the time was right and that they knew nothing about it. To non-horsey peope, this is hard to understand.

Stand tall and be proud that you could do something to help end your horse's suffering. You can't help people that way and there's nothing worse than having to watch a loved one suffer.

I had to have my daughter's pony pts last month and it's not a good time but when needs must it has to be done.

Tell those stupid people you can't put a horse to bed and tell it to rest.

Agree with madmav and Lcobby, do these people not have pets? What do they do, let them die slow agonising deaths? An yes, are they all vegans??? I bet not!

It's horrible having to make the decisions to have any animal put to sleep, so far we've had 2 horses PTS but I dread the day i have to do it again, it's not something you (well me anyway) do lightly but it's our responsibilty to do it.

SOOO Sorry for you and your friend, I hope I am brave enough to do this for my girls when they need it. I wish someone could do it for me if I needed it too.

I wonder what their reaction would have been to the poor thing starving to death as unable to get up and graze and lying dying in it's own filth would have been? Pony faced a fairly horrid death if left, kindest action,

I wonder what kind of deaths their beloved cats and/or house dogs face? People like this leave gates open on countryside walks, then blame the farmer when a motorist dies swerving to avoid the cow that escapes as a result.
