Does anyone else have a horse that just randomly yells for no reason, Not all the time but some days one of mine just shrieks all day. As far as I can hear nothing is shouting back at him. It seems to be days that for one reason or another he's a bit unsettled, today its been very blustery and he was bit of a pain to ride this morning. I'm working inside and he's just yelled and yelled all day  It drives me nuts! He has hay, he has water, he's not too hot or cold, he has company and they are all as chilled as ever.
Its almost as bad as listening to a dog barking constantly. He will do it in the field or stable if he's in that mood.
The others will call if i go out at feed time etc but not for no reason for hours on end.

Mine won't wee in the stable (a whole separate story).
A few months ago I was stuck on work calls and couldn't turn him out straight after riding. He clearly needed a wee and shouted for about 2 hours to the point my horsey neighbour messaged and asked if everything was OK.

He shouts when he hears the front door go if he's in the weight loss field (and feels he shouldn't be)
He shouts if he sees me (usually if hungry or it's raining with wind - "thank god your here to save me")

Sometimes it seems like no reason but there will be one (in his head!)

Actually he doesn't really wee much in the stable. I wonder if it is something to do with that.

Yes, for absolutely no apparent reason! Same routine, same companions etc but every so often we have a day of randomly neighing and being slightly unsettled. I haven’t worked it out yet so will be interested in other replies.

My pony has only neighed about 4 times the entire 3 years I have had him. And when he does, it is like a squeak! So funny
Sorry - but I cannot help with your dilemma.

Maybe he hears or smells something you can't some days?

(A horse can hear high pitched noises much better than a human - the upper range of a young human is 19,000 hertz and less than that with age; the upper limit of a horse's hearing is 33,500 hertz. His sense of smell is about 3x yours.)

Is this the one that was with your friend not too far away for a while? I wonder, if the wind's in the right direction, whether he can smell his old friend or even hear a whinny from his friend that you can't?

No its not, When the other one was round there though i did often wonder if they were calling each other but neighbour said hers/mine when he was at hers were always quiet on corresponding days. I was convinced it was that at first.

I agree with this, they can watch me at my kitchen table and I think that the do this !
They know when I get up as well in the morning as I have peek through the window and they are right at the bottom of the field, by the time I get to the kitchen they are at the gate waiting for food or to come in.

They often sleep right outside my bedroom window I've seen them laying down I the early hours it's like they know I'm just there.

I commented to Mr P about little old pony mare has started shouting a bit, only when I go out and he replied that no one has ever listened to her before.. 😳 bit deep from him and made me a bit sad.

I mean the reality is she knows what time her slop gets served through out the day 😂

Some one said recently that it must be amazing having horses at home and i replied It is of course, but they are quite demanding! I used to have a horse on a livery yard and did it in the morning and evening, what we both did in his own time in between was our own business... now as soon as my car pulls up they are wondering if there might be carrots in the shopping bag or one wants more hay, or a fly rug had slipped/ mask fallen off/ wants a scratch. Its very time consuming ;)

I have crept from the back door to the car a few times in secret to make a fast getaway
