Advice please- just gone to do my horses and my mare isn't moving very well. She has arthritis in her hocks and she is walking everywhere very slowly- it took her a while to come over for her feed. I have checked all her legs thoroughly and picked out her feet and can't find anything- injury or heat. I have a few thoughts:
* The cold wet weather has made her very stiff
* She has been stood still for a while and the cold and wet has made her stiff
* She has slipped in the mud and pulled something
* The sticky mud has put her back out

She's eating, drinking and is just like her normal self, she even let me pick her feet out like an angel.

Has anyone else had this problem with their horse?

She has tied up in the past (last time was about three years ago) and I suppose the way she is moving is a bit like that- but there's no reason why she would have tied up- she hasn't been ridden for a few weeks due to the weather.

Very upset/worried...

If she has tied up in the past she may have idiopathic azoutoria (sorry can't spell that) Its basically tieing up but the cause is unknown and if she has tied up in the past there may be a possibility it is this. Did she do a wee if so did you see what colour it was?

I didn't see her wee, no. I could cry, I HATE them being less than 100%.

Don't get worked up, most likely it is the arthiritis or her back from mud but was just checking to see if there was a possibility it could be IA.

Check her tomorrow, if she still looks bad after being turned out then give the vet a ring

She lives out 24/7 so will be constantly assessing her- she's eating and seems quite happy- chatty and that (she wickers a lot). Thank you :-) I really appreciate any feedback as it helps. I do also wonder if a few of those things have happened- as her hocks are a bit dodgy, the mud has caused her muscles to work harder which made have pulled something...know what I mean?

ok take a breath and relax hun x tomorrow check her and if still not right call vet - do not beat self up ok . call vet if needed and breathe - big hugs as we worry so much about our horsey babies dont we :)

I have a dodgy knee and the mud makes it 10x worse. I think this winter has been hard on all of them. If she doesn't seem better and you're still worried I'm sure the vet can put your mind at rest but as long as she seems herself I wouldn't worry too much yet. I would think if she were tying up you would identify it pretty easily as you've seen it before.

The 'old lady' in our field (she's 32/33) was looking a bit stiff yesterday.... her owner did think it was just the damp weather after the cold dry weather.... she was eating etc and looked ok in all other respects. We were just going to monitor her for a few days. She is out 24/7 too.

Thank you- that brought a tear to my eye- actually, it's still there. I will assess tomorrow and then, if needed, call the vet. She is my baby- she means the world to me- whenever something is wrong with her I always manage to convince myself it is entirely my fault. Thank you! I suppose the main thing is that she's eating, drinking, happy and there are no visible injuries or heat.

My little mare's only 14 but she did have chiro treatment last summer as her back was quite out- so it could be that too. She is happy in herself and eating, etc. The thing that annoys me is if it wasn't my horse, I would be saying 'don't panic, monitor her, call the vet if you're worried but if she's eating, drinking and seems quite content don't beat yourself up'. Thanks guys xx
