Hi all, have any of you had any experience after a horse has had an operation ie;brought my mare back from Newmarket yesterday as she was operated on last Wednesday, had her manica flexoria out, annular ligament cut and her tendon sheath tidied up,she just doesnt seem herself as in she is normally so greedy but she is not eating a lot!!!! eating her chaff n speedy beat but not much haylage,i was wondering if she may have a sore throat after having anesthetic?? vet is coming in morning to change her dressing so will ask then, just wondering if anybody has any experience with post op problems??:(

Hi
I had the same problem with my horse who had major surgery last Boxing Day.
It turns out that he had impaction colic and rapidly went down hill. I am not suggesting that this is the case, but usually decreased appetite means something is not quite right. He had to be put on IV fluids and tubed with liquid parafin every 2 hours and he was soon right as rain.
The anaesthetic plays havoc with their gut and it can take a while for them to get things moving again.
Is your horse passing good regular solid poo?
Definitely speak with your vet.
Good luck xx

My horse had an op in September where they put a plate and bolts along her pastern (see pic) she didn't eat/ drink properly for a week. i think it was the trauma of the operation. Remember for the horse, they don't know what was going to happen. So they have had an injection, gone to sleep, woken up in a padded room that is not their stable and not in the place they went to sleep and presumably with some level of discomfort. I wouldn't worry too much. Mine came round in a week and now i cant give her enough food :p if it goes on much longer than 1 1/2 weeks then maybe talk to vet. But don't panic just yet! :D

I agree with this also...it is quite traumatic for them.

She will have had an endo tracheal tube down during her anasthesia, so she may well be a bit sore, but it usually goes in a day or two.
Surgery and abnasthesia is a big assault to the horses systems, but id have expected them to have hung on to her if she wasnt right for release home.
If she were mine,id call the vet hosp and speak to someone regarding your concerns, she may well be developing an impaction colic, find out What her tpr is, there is also a chance she might be developing an infection.
Tbh id speak to vet hosp then get my vet out to rule both out

Hello , my mare was same on 17th of nov she went in for impaction colic. She was so not herself. From being a happy girl and eating anything to not really herself. She was sent home after 5 days as its alot of stress to them and there bodys. The vets like to get them home as soon as they can to get them back to there own home and what they know best ie there friends owner. Kepp eye on her to make sure she is ok and give her time to come round she is stressed and will soon pick up now she is home..good luck with her xx
