I have a problem with my 5yr old welsh sec d mare, she was backed when she was 4yrs was working beautifully, the kind of horse that learnt quick, and was very forward going, then all of a sudden she has changed she won't go forward and turns her head to the left and is touching her girth area with her nose, as if she is trying to tell me something. I though the problem may be her saddle so had Physio out who says she is absolutely fine, so then tried ridding bareback she still dies the same thing, I have had two saddlers out both saying saddle fits fine, would love to hear from anyone who has experienced the same sort of thing.

How is her condition? Is she holding weight okay? I know it is a long shot but could be something gastric like ulcers as that can show up as discomfort in the girth area.

If she's not going forward, may not necessarily be saddle but could be pelvic pain, or hock pain that won't necessarily show up as lameness.

Or, could be teeth, not wanting to o forward into the bridle.

Both mine will nudge my foot at the end of a session, a polite reminder it's time to get off rather than an indication of where pain is ;)

I've been through this with my girlie, it was hock, then teeth and saddle!!!
