Also noticed most of the horses were in gags of some sort.
Not nice to hear. The last time I watched the Puissance was when Luca Moneta won, after having not wanted to go for the last round to make sure his mare finished on a good note. Mare had no martingale, and bit was a snaffle. If only more showjumpers subscribed to his style of horsemanship.

That said, I am happy that going barefoot is becoming increasingly common even if some interviews with barefoot showjumper have suggested that education on foot care is still lacking.

I like seeing the horses faces and their ears, hence why I wanted the Belgium guy to do well in his what looked like a snaffle bridle and no ear covers.

Some of them are just plastered with kit on their heads and it looks horrible - these hideous masks, fly veils on top of the masks, those blinker cheekpiece attachments, mouth of metal work and sometimes a sheepskin noseband!

I know they're powerful horses but do they really need all that c*** on their faces?!

Now surely a horse that genuinely enjoys its job, and enjoys competing, wouldn't need any of those gadgets..?

It depends, a horse that enjoys it's job still needs to be adjustable to see a stride, and if they're very gungho they may need to have something with a little more influence than a snaffle. Ditto the blinker attachments, Olympia ia an atmosphere like no other than if they need a little concentration or it calms them so they can enjoy it more to have these attached then I can see reason for their use.

That being said, I don't like to see them over run with metal and leatherwork or random bits of gadget - but I don't have a huge issue with things which don't cause any real pressure or discomfort eg: the masks and blinkers.

Mr Blue Sky is a sight to behold. I watched him compete in the Puissance at HOYS and he was very unlucky to knock a brick down. He just seems to effortlessly spring over jumps like a stag.
Dazzler is umm...... fiesty to say the least ?

I assume the hoods are compression hoods? Meant to help anxious horses feel calmer apparently. I bought one for my horse donkeys years ago to see if it would help but it didn’t fit so never got to test it out.

I don’t like seeing horses look like a walking tack shop, but it makes sense that gags are popular, especially for puissance. The lifting helps some horses to sit back and balance. Some riders use a cable tie on each rein to limit the gag action also
Moneta’s horses are already so inverted a gag seems superfluous ? his style is not one I enjoy watching, to each their own!

Is it just dressage tonight? when did this show become about the dressage fgs, boring!

Unfortunately yes I think its just dressage. I can't watch dressage it bores me to tears!

They've juggled the schedule around - it used to be dressage for two days, then sj every night, but this year it's on different days.

I'll admit that I rarely watch showjumping, so have only seen him ride a few times, but when I have, the horse has never seemed uncomfortable. Inverted as in head way above the vertical?

they quite hollow. I am conflicted about him, his horses do seem happy-but it looks awful, am not sure if it looks awful to me because it’s not the norm though.

People get so hung up on 'just a snaffle and cavesson noseband' thing but don’t look at the hands. I do not enjoy watching Luca, but I do enjoy the vast majority of the other riders, some of whom are in much stronger bits but ride with lovely soft arms and hands

agreed- I don’t honk I am hung up on the snaffle thing, I understand why some of the gadgetry is required when jumping some of those courses-and some of the riding is fab, as is the schooling level. I’ve not seen Moneta ride in the last few years tbh but when I did, his horses did seem to be less tense and look ‘happier’ to me, even though his riding jarred. conflicted! But then I am about showjumping generally ?
