I had the vet out on Friday as mare not feeling right in canter- felt like a rocking horse going nowhere plus swishing tail, grinding teeth on lunge, not liking girth being done up, not letting me brush her tummy, croup becoming more defined but not bucking/ refusing to go into canter.

vet confirmed not lame but not right somewhere so put her on two week bute trial. been on bute since Friday (two a day) dropping down to one a day from today and told me to carry on as noraml. Horse will now let me brush her tummy (underneath), not pulling as many faces at girth being done up, canter feels marginally more forward but horse holding tail out (no swishing) and still not as loose behind.

Weird thing is she is usually quite opininated about things but prior to going on the bute appeared to be settling down and actually behaving! confused to say the least! Vet thinks possibly ulcers/ ovaries/ musculor skeletal issue or a combo of the three. Being reluctant to work behind could indicate a problem elsewhere and as shes buted up and still not right I suspect either ulcers or ovaries??

Currently ridden in treeless but Andy Wheals coming up to fit her with a treed saddle soon as cant jump in treeless.

Anyone else experience this? Did you find out what was causing it? due to call vet on friday for an update.

It may be that she has spavin, my horse swished his tail, and wouldn't canter properly, kept going disunited behind, dragging his toe, bunched up in canter. Turned out that he has hock spavin and badly fitting saddle.
