I'm seeing horse onesies everywhere on facebook but I don't understand them. My questions are: Does anyone have/use them? What are they for? When should the horse wear them? Where can you buy them?

I'm thinking about getting my horse one but I don't have a clue what they're for. Before I buy one I think I should know the answers to those questions. Thanks. (No bitchy comments!)

Im sorry but re read your post with the fact that its a horse, not a doll in mind, that it has its own thermometer and heating system and will not melt if cold and wet.

Excuse me, there's no need for the nasty comment. I am aware that's it's a horse. People have these onesies for their horses because they look nice, I'm asking if there's any benefits to having one? If I put my horse in a rug that's bad is it? Please think before you comment. I have no time for bitchy horse people!

I wouldn't say there are many benefits apart from maybe keeping your horse clean before a show. Even then they are made out of fleece and I know when my grey lies in poo it goes through his fleece rug. I see no actual point in them whatsoever, and those who fork out a tonne of money to make their horse look 'cute', even more pointless.

If you do get one, avoid Shwmae at all costs.

I don't have any personal experience with them, but I've read that they were originally created for horses that have severe reactions etc. to insect bites.

It wasn't bitchy - it was my opinion which is what you get on a forum. If you don't like it don't bother posting.

Smothering the horses entire body in sweat non breathing fleece is daft IMO - the rug industry has made millions of us horse owners since the ability to make pretty colours and patterns came to the fore.

So I've been racking and racking my brains as to why one would buy such a monstrosity .....and THE only thing I can come up with is for a novelty fancy dress class.

There isn't /really/ a point to them - as said upthread poo can get through them and they're dangerous to turn out in.

If you are going to order one then please don't order from Shwmae (now called Gee-Gee Hoods?). There's a long-running thread on here about their lack of service.

As an aside, 'bitchy comments' - it's forum and people will post what they like. Some might have a different opinion to you(!). That's OK. You're asking for opinions by posting this thread. If you don't like how a reply has been worded, ignore it. Don't take a tone replying to it that would tend to include you in the subset of 'bitchy horse people'.

Thanks for the useful comments guys! I don't think I'll get one as my filly would trash it and like some of you said there's no point if you aren't showing the pony (which I'm not right now). Plus they're quite pricey for what they are!

I would invest in a nice fleece rug for overnight if necessary, and some damn good shampoo should you want to go showing. A lot cheaper!

Humans have their own heating system too but if I go stand outside in the cold and rain whilst naked, I'm going to get hypothermia.

Personally, I don't have one but have no problem with other people buying them for their horses, why would I? It's their horse and as long as they're not harming them why should I care? They're only another form of rug after all but probably only suitable for the fully clipped or lycra ones for show ponies/horses or ones with allergies. Plus they're far too expensive for what they are and a rug with a neck on would do a better job.

Daft comparison - human systems work entirely differently to horses we dot have a furry coat! Anthropomorphising is what feeds dads such as these.

True, but people also wear ridiculous clothing (onesies being the main current offender, but I'll lump wearing thongs, UGG boots, leather/pleather trousers and stone-washed jeans in there too) but I wouldn't wear them ever!

Surely, if you don't know what something is for, why would you think to buy it? It's the same ballcocks as crank nosebands, flashes and all the other gumpf people put on their horses without having a clue why. Sorry, but this sort of thing really annoys me.

YO was thinking of getting one for her hunter as he suffers from pre-hunting nerves/excitement and has explosive diarrhea both the night before, morning and in the lorry, he manages to get it all over himself including plaits (he's also grey). I could see her point in getting him one but didn't in the end as Shwmae seem to like trading as several different 'companies' and as mentioned we don't think lycra would actually keep the poo off him and he'd boil his brains in a fleece.

Why pink stirrups? Why glittery hats? Why coloured lead ropes? Why shoes? Why chaff? The list is endless but the point is "each to their own", as long as the horse is well looked after and happy who gives a hoot, not your monkeys, not your circus.

I've found that the snuggy hoods fleece body is actually very useful for keeping my grey clean the night before a show because it has tummy flap and the back is elasticated so it fits closer and covers more of him than a conventional rug and is useful as an underrug; I also use the body part as an underrug for my cold welsh pony as it doesn't stick out under his turnout rugs and get cold and wet. I don't use the necks as they don't need them and would get too hot but the body part has turned out to be useful.

I have snuggy jams as a layer if needed under rugs, my friend made one. Is a good one too, think more for novelty value! If you had a dirty horse it might help a little

Agree, marketing persons dream

They were originally made for horses that suffered with a reaction from insect bites but then other horse owners saw them and thought they were "cute" and now business is booming. Lol they make me laugh so much when I see a horse in one. The poor horse!

I've always wondered who would actually buy a horse onesie. I know I certainly wouldn't. They look like an accident waiting to happen to me.

As much as I like a clean horse.......i wouldn't put him in anything I wouldn't wear! ( I hate people onesies with a passion lol).

Short of severe skin reactions from sun/insects etc or clean for something important (no less than meeting the queen at that for me lol)....i see them as a ridiculous fad.

You forgot glittery hoof oil/varnish.
