Has anyone had a horse that seems to only like rubber reins?

I know this sounds really odd, but my horse seems to have a real problem when I try to ride her in anything other than rubber reins. She shows her displeasure by general head shaking (nothing very extreme) and sort of throws her legs around a bit, just what is her having a general tantrum.

I don't think there is a problem with her teeth as I had the dentist not that long ago and she was fine, she does this even bareback so can't be saddle. The only thing it seems to be is the reins. She has not had a fall, is in good health otherwise.

I wouldn't worry about it but the reins she likes are really thick and starting to loose some of the rubber and the remaining rubber has started to melt everytime I ride in them so I am going to have to change them soon and I'm not sure what to do?

Anyone have any ideas?

I would think it is more likely that you ride differently/have a different contact in other reins.

Are you saying that you don't like to use the type of reins she does? Can you not just get the same/similar reins to replace the ones you have?

Agree with LJR - there's probably a difference in the way you ride. Or perhaps you use the rubber reins in specific situations which she prefers...?

If you need to replace them, I'd just find the closest thing you can, and unless you can find another reason for the change in behaviour she's just going to have to lump it. It is not unreasonable to change your reins when they wear out and she'll just have to get used to it. It's worth getting an instructor to have a look at it, though - there could be something you haven't spotted.
