Years and years ago when I went to a riding school I was told a pony is up to 14.2 and over is a horse. My 15.1 is often referred to as a pony and my vet today told me that now up to 15.2 is a pony.So when did it change and why and why do jockey club rules for pony racing insist on 14.2 or under. Still love my boys horse or pony I dont care just curious

14.2hh and under is pony, above horse. However, metric measurements have changed things slightly I believe, but not a whole hand!?? Mine gets called a pony anyway....

I also went on the basis that 14.2hh and under was a pony. Anything over 14.2hh is a horse with a few breed exceptions.

upto 14.2 is a pony and over is a horse in my book, I think your vet might have been pulling your leg!
If you go on the BSJA rules upto 148cms is a pony over is a horse. 148cms is approx 14.2 and abit, because if they were going on the exact conversion from hands to metric they would be trying to measure ponies in at 147.2cms and thats just silly! lol

under 14.2 is pony 14.2 plus a horse however pure bred arabs are horses even if they're only 13.2!!

Up to 14h2" is a pony & over 14h2" is a horse. There was some discussion some months ago about changing the sizing because there were alot of people competing horses that were 15h & more as ponies but they had life height certificates at 14h2" ( or metric equivalent). I think the arguements about life height certificates will run on & on & on.

14.2hh and under is a pony, over 14.2hh is a horse. However, for BSJA etc. where we've gone metric 148cm and under is classed as a pony, which is very slightly bigger than 14.2hh (14.2hh is 147.2cm). I think (and I might be wrong) for showing 15hh and under is a pony. Very confusing!!

<14.2hh = Pony
>14.2hh = horse

EXCEPT:

Polo ponies - always ponies and can be up to 16hh
Arabs - always horses no matter how dinky

Our vet also calls everything a pony, but its a friendly term.

Up to 14.2 classed as a pony, unless it's an Arab and then whatever the height it is still classed as a Horse.

I'm sure there are other breeds that this applies to as well.

I know that someone on here (jj4y?) has an overheight Dales, so, technically, is he still a Dales pony or a horse?
