Also that 'modern domestic horses probably originated on the steppes around the Volga and Don rivers, now part of Russia, before spreading across Eurasia, ultimately replacing all pre-existing horse lineages'

It's sad to think that there are no horses alive now that humans haven't messed with genetically

My late FIL was a fundamentalist Christian. I was telling him about a book I was reading explaining the origins of domestic horses.

His reply: “No, God made horses”.

This and his occasional phone calls saying he was worried about me and hubby as we were going to burn in hell.

Yup even the much vaunted Taki is descended from domestic horses.

But did read something that the horses we class as feral (eg mustangs) are retro evolving back and genes found in early horses are becoming more apparent.

Which makes me think the Taki is essentially generations ahead of more recent feral breeds in the process of "backward" evolution. If you let natural selection play role in breeding it seems you can reacquire qualities of extinct lineages.

I read a research paper a while back .. can't find it now but it's mentioned on the Wiki page for Przewalski's horse in relation to the Botai culture.

My horse burped once. Proper burp. I didn’t believe they could do that until I heard it! He didn’t have issues or colic etc just had a burp.
