My 15.1 pba mare that i have just started advertising was just the biggest idiot yesterday!

I know it's due to having time off and whatever but god it was awful.

She has suddenly developed total separation anxiety due to not being away from my 16.2 pbaxshire. This is total ridiculous as they hated eachother when she first came, and now they only tolerate eachother. It also doesn't help that the big lad is a little on the thick side at times.

So, we have an utter breakdown when we are taken from the field and tied up (she hates being tied up alone anyway). Won't stand still, barging, screaming and when attempting to pick out feet, stomping and kicking in a tantrum.

So finally we get to tacking up, which she is alright with, apart from clamping her teeth shut and refusing to have the bit in her mouth.

I lead her out of the gate as we have to walk past a dual carridge way to get to the lane, she's on the end of the rope snorting at everything.

I come to get on her and she is just being a total wazzock, being really rude and bolshy, so eventually i get some submission by FORCING a step back out of her (starting to lose my temper by now). I get on and she is slightly on her toes but not too bad, but the whole way round we have this awful screaming and head shaking (not helped by dumbo back at the feild calling back to her, even though he knows full well where she has gone DURRRRR)

So eventually we get back after a mear 15 mins, as I have had enough by then. Horse exhausted and sweating like hell, so I have to hang around in the drizzle and wait for it to cool off enough to have its turnout back on so I can put the damn thing out.

STRESSSSS.

So, I come home thinking that the horse i just rode is not worth half what it is advertised for. (I now have a more rational view that she was having an off day). I have come up with a strict plan for next week to get both our minds back on track! I can just imagine if she'd had this off day when someone came to see her, people would think I was an utter mentalist...

Rant over.

I'm sure she'll calm down again soon

My pony has been the same. We have also had to move yards so that has unsettled him a little - but I'm hoping with a regular routine and work he'll stop being an eejit!

Can you put the advert on hold until she settles again? It woudn't be fair on potential sellers to let them see her if she is being a wally :)

well just goes to show horses arnt machines and sadly there are a few out there that have been affected by the weather. My poor big lad went through seperation anxiety with my mare ( he hates her) after losing 2 close pair bonds in matter of months. I was quiet firm consistent but full of praise when he was a good lad but nothing negative - taken a few months but he as settled again back to the lovely gentle muppet he is.

Ah, I think it was just an off day allround, she's usually an angel. I have only advertised her locally atm anyway. I wouldn't have bought her if she was like that when I saw her haha!

I really hope the weather stays alright (as far as england goes).
Bring on spring/summer!

lol with you with the bring on spring and summer lol - been a tough old winter so far and enough to push both horse and human near the edge - sometimes we need to step back and breath - she will come back fine hun just give her time after the poo weather - big hug xx

Never mind....tomorrow is another day. If it makes you feel any better, one of my youngsters spent 40 minutes whilst hacking out Thursday, doing mini broncs, squealing, and behaving as though she had never seen a bush/tree/person before in her life....This is the same youngster I moaned about being a bit "boring" a couple of months ago!
Our escort found it all highly amusing!

another one here with a nutter today :o

Grumpy to tack up (we did that yesterday mum!)
Normally quiet but forwards going safe hack, turned into 'spooky-loon' and peered at every bush/tree/person/dog/etc as if there were going to jump out & club us
Bargy when we got back as wanted to get back into field. When back in field then scooted about pulling faces at companion.

Only not been ridden for 2 weeks but has still been out for 10 hours+ every day.

Has the air changed?

oh I feel for you on the serpation anxiety front! My horse has never ever ever been clingy and is always more than willing to leave the field, BUT since the snow she's ever so clingy. She's never made a noise in the year or so i've had her yet last week and this week she's tied on the yard, fidgiting and screaming her head off! Hoping when we're back in regular work she'll settle down again.

Tell me about it! My big lad has rattled my confidence so badly with his anxious high spirited behaviour that I've decided he's too much for me & has to go. :(

So is mine! We've only been at my yard since Tuesday, but my pony has already decided he can't be without his new field buddy.

If I turn him out first, he just gallops up and down until I put his friend out - and if I bring him in he weaves non stop until his friend is in too! Strange - he's always been a real loner before!

Oh hutchlou, thats awful! I know separation anxiety can be really horrid, leading to napping and all sorts! Just seems to blow their minds! :(

ella19- Snap, I hope we both get the desired results!

The only thing that hack proved is that we could be brilliant at endurance, talk about a pace!

Mmm, fink its the weather, mine's usually a laid-back sorta guy but has been a total loon recently; anything will set him off be it a sweet-paper bowling towards him, bird flying out the hedge, rubbish bins, etc etc. All of which he's normally Mr Plod about.

Also, he's very stressy when the other horses in the yard go out for a hack or whatever and just stands at the gate neighing his head off about it; but thankfully is OK when he goes for a solo hack on his own.

Had you thought of trying a calmer for your cob mare OP? As a temporary fix it might just calm her down a bit? Apparently Magnesium is good for calming, also there's a Herbal one, sorry can't remember name of it but think it might be one by Global Herbs. OR you could try some Rescue Remedy? (for yourself and her!).

Grey Mare has been interesting as well, but D1 is still grinning - though she did say she wasn't going to hack out until GM could stand still for more than two seconds :o. Consistent work is the answer for her, so fingers crossed the school stays rideable!

I can get back on Dizz in four weeks and two days (so who's counting lol). Have decided that if D1 is feeling kind, she can ride her every other day, just to keep her ticking over, but not getting too fit.

No idea how we' LL cope when it comes to Dizz going off on hacks on her own - GM gets a little bit stressed when Dizz goes to the stable first and thats fifty feet away and in full view! If we can't get it sorted, it might be a Mickey Gavin session come the Spring :)

Update on fridays disaster:

After thinking the culprit was the big guy, only today finding out, it is infact the little 11hh pony who hates Darcy, i have never seen the thing move so fast, screaming and charging around.

Luckily the fat little miss is lured away by some hay. I also gave Darcy a haynet whilst tied up and she actually stood still  Ride went alot better too, some screaming to start, but setteled down nicely once we had seen a few other horses on the way. All in all alot better, hopefully we can 'keep calm and carry on' :)
