I'm looking to buy my first horse at the moment so I'm pretty clueless about passports and wonder if you can help me out.

I went to look at a horse and the owner had the passport to hand for us to see, so we were able to check her details.

The passport was issued in Ireland, and is not connected with any breed society. How would having an Irish passport affect me? The owner said that they "hadn't got around to updating her passport" now I'm not sure whether this means that they hadn't swapped it for a british one or that they hadn't registered themselves as the new owner.

So what should I check, and what if anything do I need to do to make sure that she is all correctly passported if I buy her? I don't want to make any mistakes on this.

Thanks!

An Irish passport is absolutely fine as are many others eg Danish, Dutch etc. I think what she meant is that she hadn't had the ownership changed to herself. This should not prove a problem.

You send it back to the issuer (in this case Ireland) with a fee but would probably need a receipt to show you own the horse. When you get the horse vetted the vet will look at the passport and make sure the horse he/she is vetting is the one on the passport.
