Hello, I am new and a novice so please bare with me. I am hoping in the near future to actually own my own pony and so am preparing as much as I can beforehand. One thing I'm not that clued up on is horse first aid. Although I will continue to research this subject I was wondering please from all your experiences etc, what should be in a first aid box for horses/ponies? Thank you

If you look on most equine sites, or even ebay and look up 'horse first aid kit' or 'equine first aid kit' you will find some good starter sets. You can then add extra animalintex, self adhesive bandages, iodine, gaffer tape etc... to the kit if required. :)

You can buy books specifically about equine first aid too, useful to have in the first aid kit to help you decide if the vet is needed as well as to learn how to treat minor things, ones with photos of injuries/disease to go alongside the descriptions, are good. The RSPCA horse care book by Colin Vogel has a handy flow chart for "do I need the vet right now, ASAP, tomorrow or next week if things haven't improved".

My first aid kit contains: gamgee; animalintex; vetwrap bandages; tail bandages (can also be used on legs); scissors (which stay there not used for anything else); electricians tape (for fastening bandages so horse can't accidentally unravel them); thermometer and vaseline; salt, small pot, cotton wool, syringe (to help clean wounds); wound gel and for the humans ordinary plasters, elastoplast tape on a reel, micropore tape (can use the gamgee and scissors and salt etc for cleaning/dressing).
