anyone else do this?

the plan for this winter is to try my 17hh & my 11.1hh in a 20 x 20 stable, they have been in during the day together to see how they cope & they have both been fine, even share the same net

they have lots of space to wander away from each other if they want to & there will be lots of hay/water in for them.

if it doesnt work then i will separate them though.

so , anyone else share?
 
yes, they have both been seen down & there was tons of room between them.

the 11.1hh was snoring her head off in the corner & the big one was sound asleep in the middle lol.
 
I used to keep my 15.2hh and a 14hh pony I have now sold together. They had a 14 x 14ft open fronted field shelter type stable with a large post and railed concrete block in front of it. They did fine together as both are very dopey horses and never even put ears back at each other.
 
I did this with my 16.1hh horse and my sons pony who was 11.2hh - they loved it and you'd often find them curled up together asleep at night. It was also good because they were close but not so close they couldn't be parted. Just be careful at feed times to feed separate.
 
I think that's an excellent idea - and they'll be very happy. I've never really understood why we take social, herd animals and put them into self contained lonely boxes for hours.
My three live out...but I'd yard them together if my livery had the facilities....or put them in one (very large) stable.
Mine tend to lie down in heaps in the field, closer to each other than you'd think.

feed times are fine, they have a understanding, big one eats while little one watches, when hes finished she cleans the bucket out

would most likely feed him in the stable while she is getting brushed outside etc anyway

I think they will be as happy as anything. I have had my 17.3 and 14.0 in together when we were altering the yard. They were in the big one's stable which is 16ft by 16ft and they looked so sweet lying down together. Your two will have loads of room. I now have Tilly (14.1) and the 14.0 in a huge stable, just separated by a half wall so they can groom each other over the top - if she didn't wee for England, they could share properly as they love being together.
 
Popnio is currently sharing with someone elses horse, they're in one half of a cow shed, and seem to be fine.

If i get my own place someday I will make sure I have facilities for horses to share stables, as I think it's better for their mental health (so long as they get on) if they have to stay in due to excess rain etc.
 
Our Chestnut pony and our shetland share a stable as needs be (usually live out) and they dont seem to have a problem at all, think the pair bonding you always hears about is definitely true!
 
My old mare shared a stable with her dam at one point - one was 14.3hh and the other 15hh - the stable was huge and they were as happy as can be in there together. I also used to have a lovely barn (16 x 14) for my current two to free range in and out of during the winter - I would quite often go in and find them both led down together during teh winter. I've never had a problem with feeding times/sharing hay either. If I had the choice I would have them in this arrangement again as its lovely and natural for them.
 
I'd love to keep mine together. The gelding has always had 'friends' (thank you Deb) to share yards or barns with and seemed to like it (apart from the odd scrap).

Unfortunatel;y, the current mare has proved she doesn't like it by kicking all hell into the gelding when they trashed the electric, despite having an acre to roam!

Oh well, maybe next time.
 
I've always done it with mine though only after a long time together so i know they're not likely to fight and tend not to do it with the oldest ones in case they get poorly in the night.
