My 2 and half year old GSD would rather eat horse poo than her More Than Large Breed Chicken food. She suffers from colitis and horse poo doesn't seem to be doing her any harm, but I am concerned that she's not eating normal dog food and getting all the nutrients she needs. She also seems quite keen to eat horse feed when my back is turned... is it just the natural scavenger in her? I am thinking about swapping her food (gradually obviously) but not sure what to try, something with Glucosamine and joint care ideally, any suggestions?

when i 1st got my pup he had loose poos, when he had his jabs and was allowed out and about he was crazy for horse poo and the runs stopped.
i asked my vet who said it would not do any harm as it was fibre,he gradually stopped and only has some occasionaly now.i just kept him away when i had wormed the horses.
he is also partial to horse feed now and again.

Arden Grange is good for GSDs, Fish4Dogs or Orijen, although it is very expensive.
Have you thought about the raw diet, it is meant to be good for dogs with colitis in a lot of cases, if not fully raw, Prize Choice and Natural Instinct or DUCK do more palatable alternatives!

My young shep was obsessed with sheep poo, took a few weeks of keeping him on a long line, being vigilant and recalling/reeling him in from the poo and rewarding him for ignoring it.
He now sees poo and just heads straight to me for the food :p
I would start teaching this, apart from anything else it is useful to have a 'leave it' command to protect your dog from eating something which may do it harm.

Thanks for the feedback.

Good to know it probably doesn't do her any harm, it definitely firms her up so to speak. It's like she sees the yard as a feeding zone!

I'll have a look into those. Don't know much about Raw food diet so will have to do some research. She does understand the leave it command, but you're right I probably need to reinforce it better with treats.

Thanks again.

my dog knows the `leave-it` command, but having stables,hay-nets and water to do,i cant watch him every second.

Just make sure your dog doesn't have access to horse poo that could have traces of wormer... Horse wormer is not good for dogs at all :)

Second that - our old lab x once consumed some feed with wormer in. Cue one very poorly doggie :( She went very wobbly, pupils dilated and she was walking in to walls at home. We had to keep her somewhere dark and quiet and were told by the vets to watch she did not fall in to a coma!

That was many years ago though - I imagine vets may do something to treat them these days!!!

Our Vet years ago used to advise owners with dogs with "dodgy tummys" to let them eat horse poo as it was good for settleing the gut, agree though not with any chance of wormer in it.
