Have noticed that my mares poo resembles lots of small separate golf balls. She hasn't got that much grass and seems to devour every blade that appears, resulting in a very bare field. Is this a concern and should I be supplementing her with hay. She's about the right weight but worried cos its very different to my friends horses.

Horse poo should come out in balls (a little bigger than a golf ball for a 16.2hh horse though!) and then break on impact with the ground.

Do you give your horse any feed or mineral suppliment? Could she be deficient in something?

My companion ponies poo is much like you describe and he is on a starvation paddock. Perhaps it is something to do with just feeding grass.

They don't break on impact, they are rock hard. I give her some chaff and lo-cal at night but her paddock is bare. She drinks about 3/4 of an average bucket a day.

She definitely needs some more fibre/roughage if her stools are rock hard. If she is in a bare paddock for weight reasons give her lots of hay soaked for at least an hour, preferably more. This definitely isn't right.

sounds like she isnt getting enough from the grass also maybe there isnt enough grass to get the moisture from as well,do you make her food quite wet at nite ? i put alot of water in my boys feed as well to help him eat it and also gets that added water !
maybe put a bit of soaked hay in at nite for her as well and if that fails then see what supps you can get to help with her digestion like a pro biotic etc

you could give her some hi fi lite or alfa a good doer it won t put weight on but will give her a bit more fibre perhaps a section of hay here and there .

Thanks for all your advice. Gonna ring vet as gave her a bit more hi fi lite tonight, only 2 handfuls in all, well soaked and she got choke.

The choke may well have been caused by her bolting her feed because she's hungry, unless she does it again I wouldn't bother getting the vet.

As some of the others have said I'd give her plenty of well soaked hay if she was mine. Try to feed it a couple of times a day, if possible in a small mesh haynet, & give her her hay a while before her bucket feed so she's less hungry & less inclined to bolt it. I'd also add some salt to her feed to encourage her to drink more & give a broad spectrum vit & min supplement as what she's getting won't be meeting her needs.
