Hello.

I have the summer off and I really would like a coloured. Problem is, is that I dont have huge funds to play with! What are peoples experiences and average cost of the horses from the auctions?

I am worried that I will get upset will end up getting one that I feel sorry for.

Thanks

coloured 18 month olds and 2 year olds were reaching between 450 guineas for ickle ones and 600 guineas (or over if they looked particularly nice) when I went to derby horse market in February.

They always look really sad and dirty and scared at Derby

Can you not find a dealer/breeder of unbroken baby coloured cobs instead? The prices wont be much different and at least you will have the opportunity to handle it in a less stressful situation. I found a few people who obviously bred youngstock to sell on adhorse website. Problem was they were mostly in Cornwall and Wales!

15.2 -16.2

4yo - 8yo

Mare/gelding. Good temp, medium bone. Must be lightly backed, as long as it is safe to get on, walk and trot I can do the rest.

ahhh ok, I have never been. Can you recommend any other ones that might be better for what I am looking for?

i'm based in lancs

Hi Laura,

Rather than go to Beeston, or any other auction, how about asking round locally what's for sale? Lancs must have lots of RCs + PCs, lots of riding centres. Also freebie mags - Horsemart? There used to be another one which Robinsons used to stock (can't remember name, sorry).

Forgive me for being a boring old fart, but it's never a good idea to look for a horse that you want 'right now'. You've got the summer off, want to enjoy it riding, and that's great! But what if you buy something in a hurry from a sale, you need lots of time to work on him/her before you can enjoy, then winter comes...

I've always wanted to work in a trekking centre over the summer, in Wales, Lakes or Scotland, where i can ride lovely coloureds. Just an unfulfilled dream of mine, but maybe another aspect to think of, friend?

Good luck, whatever you decide to do, from a fellow lover-of-coloureds! BS x

Hi Thanks Brandysnap!

I think you are probably right. I have wanted a coloured for ages, I think I could end up rushing in and ending up with trouble. I might keep an eye out locally, or see if any local studs are having reductions.

Thanks

I know a coloured that will go threw Beeston in the near future, failed a vetting and she cant get rid, its intermitently lame due to an old injury so beware

You can get good uns through Beeston, friend bought a pony that turned into one of the top JA ponies in the country. Added a lot of 0's to her purchase price

But generally it is a case of buyer beware, I think a lot of people use it as a last resort selling ground, which says it all. Also lots of ponies that will pull at your heart and purse strings, I daren't go into the sales section

try cobs n plods. they deal with mainly just coloured gypsy cobs but if u tell them wat u want they will look for u. my auntie has a riding school and wen she took over 2 yrs ago she replaced all the school horses she now has 14 from cobs and plads and they all do the job, and if the are unsuitable they will take them back without fuss and swop for a new 1. just search for cobs n plods for they're website or i cud message u their phone number if u want.
