Just wondering - take an ordinary cob x tb, nice enough horse lets say, how much more do you think its "worth" than a bay if its:

a: Skewbald/piebald
b: blue and white/lemon and white/or some other unusal colouring?

As much as someone is willing to pay I guess! I wouldn't value either at any more than solid coloured horse, but some people will pay over the odds for something a little bit different.

and would pay less if it was a chestnut mare
more if it was an appy
I also think they'd pay more if it was a nice dun as that colour has a reputation for being 'good' in the sense of able/wellbehaved/kind

i wouldnt pay more for a colour or less for a colour particularly, except i wouldnt have an appy as ive had bad experiences with some real horrorbags and its tainted my opinion

I think it is personal choice - I wouldn't pay any more for a coloured horse, but then colour is way down my list of considerations anyway.

I hate coloureds, but they do tend to sell for more money. Coloureds with a full white face (rare enough) sell for a fortune though...

Some people are prepared to pay more for a certain colour- I wouldnt have paid anymore for my coloured because of his colouring, similarly a grey would put me off buying it all together, because they dont appeal to me in the slightest.

i just bought a coloured mare (today), and she cost less than my solid colour geldings (all were as green as grass when bought). i remember when you couldn't shift a coloured horse for love nor money!!!! now they sell like hot cakes - i personally think its crazy - at the end of the day - handsome is as handsome does!!!
however, if i was buying to sell - i would keep an eye out for coloureds as people can afford to charge more for them, while the 'trend' lasts.....

I think its the same with any purchase, people are prepared to pay more for what appeals to them personally.....

If I went to see a horse and it was perfect in every way AND it was a lovely colour, whatever that may be, i may be tempted to pay more because it appeals to ME.

What i find strange is that any old horse (regardless of ability and conformation) is regarded as being more valuable because it is coloured. And as for the white faces being more valuable..... Yuk.

Having got merlins next door neighbour in today to save him being alone in the field... was stunned to find his nose peeling and bleeding from sunburn (he's mostly white with a black head but a huge wide blaze and pink muzzle)....... and we have had no sun for weeks. This alone is enough to put me off for life..... poor pinky nostrils!!!

What an earth will happen when we get a summer. Merlin has factor 60 to protect his nose and a fly mask with a nose, but he does not get peelin bleeding shreds of skin hanging off so he must be a bit more hardy with mainly black on him.

SUNCREAM!!!! i use tesco's baby sun cream for my boys pink noses - works a treat and doesn't smell of chemicals like so many do!!!!! (soryy - a bit off topic)

i cant believe shilasdair was brave enough to put that comment on here being as someone was lynched only recently for a similar comment and taken off of the forum for just that. even the word pikey is highly unpc. everyone has their own choice. i did find my coloured cob was more money than most i looked at BUT its for the temperament more than the colouring (i hope).......altho they have become very "fashionable" especially if they are 50/50 in colouring.

I aim to please

I can't believe people take themselves so seriously as to bother slating me...but I am braced ready for the coloured cob brigade to launch their attach

I have to confess to not minding coloured horses...but there are a lot of coarse ones around with poor conformation, so generally I'd pay less as I prefer a more TB/warmblood animal.

i had no idea what i was buying when i bought mine, just fell for him himself and was shocked and thrilled when 2 judges at a local show told me what a stunner i have for conformation, paces and neckline etc. i told them i must have got lucky!

The reason why show horses seem to be more expensive when they are coloured, is that they have more classes that they can do at HOYS. Simple as that. I like coloureds, but I don't like white faces - I prefer them to have a solid coloured face and a coloured body.

I don't like white faces either! But i do think coloured horses are 'trendy' at the moment you all probably saw my post a few weeks back about someone offering £10k for Blue! Because he is a coloured who can jump! Mental!

When I bought Flash I had no idea that coloured horses were 'fashionable' at the time, equally, I had never liked coloured horses before and never went out looking for a coloured. I just fell in love with his personality, and his slightly crazy markings match it nicely! I wouldn't pay more for a horse because of it's colour, it's right down my list of priorities. People have asked to buy Flash from me at shows and I was really shocked!
