I seemed to have caused quite a bit of discussion with my last post on this subject!! Just for the record I wasn't trying to offend anyone, it wasnt personal towards those lucky enough to have large amonts to spend on their horses!! Or those who work hard enough to breed these superstars.
Maybe i am naive because i seemed to have been very lucky with my cheaper horses
. But just to make this clear, I wasnt talking about elite horses. I think the breeding programmes etc to improve horses in this country are amazing. I know decades of hard work and money have gone into these horses and they clearly justify their price tags. Im sure going to be greatful for how amazing they are when watching the olympics!! And hopefully that will filter down and we will all end up riding sounder, safer horses for the consequence.
What I was talking about was the ridiculous prices of average horses nowadays. I know some of you said they wont sell but clearly some must or the average price for an average horse wouldnt be so high? I wondered wether it was snobbery as to why these horses were so expensive but clearly not!!
It seems many of you pay a lot more for a lovely horse so you have a chance of doing well (and why not). But is this a good thing?? Is the cost of decent horses today making our sport more elitest agin? If the prices are like they are now what are they going to be like in 10 years? I bet our wages wont go up much!!
How will the average joe who brought their fav riding school pony be able to compete with a son of Donnerhall at their local village show? will they get disheartened and give up? Is this good for us grass roots riders?
I keep my dreams alive by the stories of apparently average, cheaper horses being nothing of the sort and going on to be little stars.
OK, enough now. Promise I wont do any more posts about prices
I do find it very interesting though, and its great to hear others thoughts on these things.
