I’m thinking of doing the unthinkable. Selling one 2 year old and a 4 year old (just backed). This obviously goes against my religion but as they say, you can’t keep them all. You can’t keep them all especially when you go to Ireland to buy young stock because you won’t sell any of the other ones that we’re meant for producing and selling.

The 4 year old is fantastic but is too short for me and the 2 year old is more sport horse/eventing type and I like chunky dressage types. I could also do with some money ?. I have no idea what sort of price I’m looking at for the 2 year old mainly. He’s a total blank canvas with super manners and unbelievable temperament. There really is something very special about Irish draught breeding (I/4 irish 3/4 to) that until I bought these babies I didn’t realise. So any advice? When to sell, how much? Best place to advertise? Vetting of people? No rush to sell but I would like to sell this year as it’s the backing and bringing on that make me want to keep everything! Thank you

I would sell now before everyone is back at work and the a*se falls out of the market again as everyone runs out of time, or just want to focus on one steed as they can compete again.
No idea re: pricing as there are too many variables and I don't know your horses.
I think you get a feel for a home/people when they visit, but selling via FB is always a good idea as then you can stalk the profile, and see their previous posts on horsey groups which should give you an idea of what they're like.

For the 2yo it’s generally not a brilliant time to sell. A year too early to do much with them and they are often mid fuglies.

So to optimise you market you will need to put a little effort in to attract people to look. Get some of the winter fluff out. Trim up nicely. Stand them up well on a hard surface in nice weather. Make an effort to get some video of them moving loose in an arena. It wouldn’t hurt to see what they show loose jumping (but only offer it up if it’s good!)

Advertise with full bloodlines. If there is notable performance on the dam side then sell it.

In general, unless it’s something special, people expect to pay very little for 2yos (<5k)
