as in run of the mill horse as oppose to show jumper etc. Had a look in france and they range between 800 - 2000 euros, which I thought was pretty cheap!
Don't forget that you have the cost of importing them to add on to the purchase price... You can get cheap horses but you have the same problems on the continent as you get in this coutry when you are looking. With the travelling expenses incurred in looking for your horse, you might be better off sticking to the UK. Also, how good is your French? Unless you are fluent it can make it difficult to avoid being taken for a ride by the same type of dodgy sellers we sometimes find in this country.
No! (well, sometimes.... but you need to import them etc). I bought my 'run of the mill' horse in the UK for £400 and my pony for £50. My pony will sadly always be run of the mill but my TBx has started to display a worrying talent for SJ and dressage
The price really seems to vary depending on who you buy from and what area you buy from - my OH has just started working in Hereford and he says the prices there are really cheap compared to some of the breeders we looked at in Gloucestershire.
I don't know about importing costs, but I bought my boy over here (France) for 1000...And was told by an English woman over here that if i wanted to sell him she would pay 4000 for him...
So i do think they are cheaper over here, but you have to consider all the costs and not just the buying ones.
Now is not a good time to buy a horse on the Continent as the exchange rate is really poor. It's currently about 1.4 Euros to the £1, which means the £ is very week - and predicted to fall more.
