Hi there - my name's Ross Copland and I was hoping this fantastic forum might be able to help me with my psychology project. I have worked with horses for about 6 years now, and in preparation for my uni degree, I'm conducting my own psychology project. I have already given this anonymous questionnaire out to my local livery yards and horse colleges and have had a fantastic response (238 samples so far), but was hoping that you could spare a few minutes to answer my questions. I'm investigating whether the level of turnout a horse receives affects their behavior in other everyday situations; I apologize for the layout of these questions - but other forums have found this the easiest format so far.

Note:

I am aware of the subjective nature of this study, however I aim to collect at least 300 samples to try and find a pattern of behaviour. Some points have been mentioned to me such as I need another question adding hacking alone/in company. All opinions are appreciated and will be placed in my evaluation. Where 2 answers for one question are given, a score of 0 is recorded.

The questionnaire works on a scoring system (eg: 1 point for 1, 2 for 2 ... 0 for 6) and an average score is calculated based on the no. of questions answered to eradicate the need to compare horses age and experiences.

I aim to collect as many samples as possible to ease the problem of behaviour and experience linked to age/breed etc... in paticular I need those who keep their horses in 24/7 - if anyone knows of a good forum for that I would be extremely greatful.

To be perfectly honest though, I've had her on all different management systems (out 24/7, in 24/7, out at night, out during the day) and she's so docile and so well-trained and polite that she's not changed that much the whole time I've had her!

Ted is a TB ex racer who had extensive experience of all situations and as a result its excellent to handle in every way. When referring to rideing in the above case i am referin to his mannerism and behavior.. as if it was way of going he would be 2's lol

Not sure which category she fits into. She is in during the day in summer and in at night/out during day in winter.

3 - he can be nappy and argumentative sometimes, at other times he's a sweetie. He can be inconsistent really, and he's very sensitive to my frame of mind.

What sort of course are you going to do at uni? I'm currently in my 3rd year of an Applied Psychology and Sociology course, I think that its great that you're doing a research project before you've even started! Its a great study and I hope you get some interesting findings from it.

I did have my horses in 4 days a week with a few hours out other days weather permitting and they became unrideable, strong and bucking. (even bronking in the stable). Did not suit mine hence the change.

Quick note - IMHO my horse is like this whether he is stabled at night or out 24/7, in fact he's actually worse to catch when out 24/7 and is worse to lead then as well.

I have 5 horses, from a brood mare to an advanced medium dressage horse. They are aged 16, 16, 23, 24 and 30. I don't have time to fill in 5 questionnaires, but you might want to transfer the information yourself. They are all on 24 hour turnout April- November (December if very mild but with rugs on) and otherwise turn out during day and stabled at night except the brood mare who is out 24/7 (She is a tough Cleveland Bay). In answer to your questions, they are all very good (5) except my riding mare (not the brood mare who obviously isn't ridden but is no problem to handle) who is not brilliant in traffic and hacking alone, spooks and will load - eventually, so probably 2 there. Otherwise no problems with any in any of the other categories, so all 5's. We moved last year to our own place with 11 acres and I can tell you that more turnout and living in a small herd situation has without doubt made them more relaxed and better able to keep condition on. I am a complete convert to turn out in all weathers, though I realise that it would not suit every horse, nor every owner's way of life, nor type of land and you can't criticise them for that.

As you say, your research is very subjective and does not take account of the "job" a horse has to do or type of horse/pony to mention only two things. A young native is better equipped to be turned out 24/7 than an elderly warmblood; someone with twenty acres of well drained land will be able to offer 24/7 turn out whereas an owner with two acres of clay will not; a top class dressage horse may not be turned out much, but may live on an interesting busy yard and go out competing a lot, whereas a 30 year old Exmoor may live out it's days in lonely turn out if it's alone. There are so many variables.

It would take me ages to fill this out for my horses in work, so can i just make a few observations about this which might be of help in your overview/summing up etc, based on my horses over the years, which have had all sorts of turnout regimes.
Virtually irrespective of the horse's individual temperament, I've found almost every horse much more relaxed overall when out as much as possible.
The only exception is the occasional horse who is much more relaxed if in for, say, 10 hours a day (at night in winter, daytime in summer, say) and really relaxes and sleeps properly when in the stable... some horses just don't seem to let their guard down completely when trying to sleep in the field, and can end up less relaxed (sleep deprivation?!) overally as a result, e.g. spookier on hacks. Perhaps these horses were on individual turnout and so didn't have the benefit of the herd system of taking turns to sleep.
A lot of horses I've had which lived out, with shelters etc when occasionally brought in to the stable, would lie down very soon, and soon be snoring!

Keeping a horse in 24/7 (other than when out of the stable for exercise) makes most horses much fizzier, and I've had it make one or two almost lethally dangerous to take out... either in hand or under saddle.

Further information.

My horses behaviour is spot on when she is ridden every day and is doing lots of different activities. She can more difficult in the winter when we don't do as much and I've always put this down to her getting a bit bored.
