Condolences to the owners.

Thank goodness sense was seen and the police put this poor animal out of it's misery without it having to wait, it can't have been pleasant for anyone involved

I'm sure the daily fail will sensationalize it into something horrific I'm glad the police did what they did. I wish they had years ago after a multi-vehicle accident in the snow where a poor horse was left in shock and ended up having a massive heart attack because the vets couldn't get through in the snow and the traffic that had built up. The horse had a broken leg I believe, among other injuries I;m sure as had been catapulted out of a horse box and down a bank). The police were not happy as they had the means and the training, but had been told no by their superior. I can still see the image of the young lad of the owner seeing it all

This. If they have the means to do it, and advice from the vet, I see no reason why the horse shouldn't be put out of its misery asap.

Very sorry to the police man/woman who did the deed.... Couldn't have been easy but I'm glad everyone saw what was the right thing to do and no-one (horse and human alike) suffered for to long seeing the horse in distress.

Very brave of the police officer to do that I think and if it was my horse, as devastated as I'd be, I would be thankful that the horse did not have to suffer longer. If police have the means and the confidence to do it then they certainly should if they judge that it is necessary.

I do wonder if the police involved knew a bit about horses to be honest or maybe just had had specialist training as it isn't easy to make that call but, as a horse person you know when there's nothing that can be done.

It's really nice to see people do appreciate that the police are people too! Even with vet advice it's not what s/he expected to be doing on a shift today I'm sure.

My OH is policeman, he attended a broken down horsebox and shut the road (bigish A road) while the 4 y/o on it's first trip out! was unloaded and re loaded into a recovery box - people at local show centre were talking about how amazing it was that he understood it was a tricky situation for weeks afterwards (I grinned quietly to myself as I over heard)
