Hi I am 16 and work at a yard every single morning and afternoon and haven't missed a single day in two years I adore all 5 horses there they are my life and I don't think I'd be here without them. My horses mum was put down today and I held her as she was shot, it was just me her and the guy who shot her. I only took a very very small amount of her mane as I couldn't bring myself to take her beautiful mane and tail off of her. I've been curled up on her rug in her stable crying for hours but as we all know horses always come first above ourselves and above all else and it would have been selfish to keep her when she could be happy and pain free. Does anybody know what I could do with the small amount of hair I have as a keepsake so I still have part of her with me? Maybe a pendant or something? I've seen pendants with horse hair in them but a part of me wants a clear bullet pendant with her hair in if they even exist. I thought seeing as I am now functional although struggling to type this I would ask as I know so many have gone through the indescribable pain. I would attatch a photo but I'm unsure how to.

So sorry to hear this........ if the horse was shot, presumably the local kennels did the job? In which case you could ring them and ask if you could have something like a bit more tail and/or mane, or a shoe. But (sorry) you need to get on with this soonish.........

If you are not the owner of the horse, then I would ask whoever is the owner whether they might be able to let you have something like a shoe; if the horse was taken to kennels you might need to arrange this direct with them (but ask the owner first).

There are people that do bracelets etc out of mane and tail hair, but I think they do need quite a lot and it needs to be a certain length to be able to work with. I don't know about doing a pendant, presumably you could have the bit you've got, put into a sort of laminate and solidified? So you could have it as a pendant. There MUST be someone out there who does this, hopefully someone on here will know??? Anyone?

Have you got any nice photo's? You could splash out on a nice photoframe?

So so sorry for your loss, we've all been there I'm afraid, and it never gets any easier.

Yes, if you only have a small amount of hair there are places that will set it in resin to make pendants, rings etc. When you're feeling up to it, Google will give you plenty of contacts. So sorry for your loss x

I can't remember the name of the company but it was a specific horse place that was about an hour away. I have a beautiful picture of her eye that I could get printed and framed. Hoping there is someone who does Thank you.

Your incredibly brave. My daughter is 16 and like you has a job on a yard she loves but I can't imagine her doing what you've just done. Where were the owners? It's a huge thing to expect a 16 year old girl to do and then stay alone at the yard for hours after.
Some of the resin beads and charms are really pretty and only need a tiny bit of hair.
I'm really impressed at your maturity op and so sorry for your loss xx

So sorry OP. My daughter is just your age. Do talk to your parents or someone you trust about how you are feeling - this is devastating at any age and we all need to talk about it when it happens. If you can't talk to someone you know you could try the BHS "Friends at the end" service. The Blue Cross also have help for people who have had an animal PTS. Don't bottle it up.

My daughter has some of her Sec A's hair in resin from Shpangle - here http://www.shpangle.co.uk/Lock_of_Hair.php

I can't believe you were on your own and had to deal with such an upsetting thing at work, where were her owners or your employer? I have seen some lovely key rings that have a locket of hair inside you would only need a small amount for those, can't you ring your mum and get her to pick you up breaks my heart to think of you crying all afternoon you poor thing:(

I have a beautiful pendant from here with some hair from my boy's saddlecloth in it. He only needed a tiny amount and sent the rest back to me. I love it - it feels warm against your skin which i found comforting.
Sorry for your loss OP, hugs xxx

You sound very brave and mature sorry to hear of your loss.

I've seen several bracelets made from mane advertised but not actually had one done so can't really recommend anywhere but will probably post on here asking for suggestions when my boy goes.

When you're feeling ready how about asking your parents as a present for your birthday or Christmas if you could get a painting of her done or one or two of your favourite photos printed onto a canvas? That way if you've got any hair left over after your pendant you could keep it in a little keepsake box on a shelf underneath? At hickstead there are some lovely ladies who paint a picture of your horse onto a door sign or little boxes so you could maybe have her picture and name painted onto something like that then keep any left over hair inside? I can't remember what the company is called who has the ladies at hickstead but if you Google when you feel ready there may be companies who offer similar?

Eta found them: http://www.stableplaques.com/page17.htm

There are lots of lovely keepsakes you could choose to have made and lovely suggestions made already, just have a browse around and pick what you'd prefer most. :)

You've had such a tough day, bless you. It's normal to feel devastated in your shoes but you're absolutely correct, you did the right thing and should be proud of yourself even though right now things seem so very sad. Please let your family and friends know how upset you are, you are extremely mature for your age but you will still need support from your loved ones. :)

I'm not a pro artist and lost all of my drawings due to flooding but have managed to find this picture of an unfinished drawing I took before they were ruined. If you would like, send me a pic and I'll draw her for you FOC. :)

I lost Bren a few weeks ago, and have had a bracelet made from some of his tail. If you are on FB, have a look at PF Horsehair Designs. She can do pendants set in resin, and is also a very good artist. I have a lovely pencil drawing of Mac and Dolly that she did for me several years ago.

I am sorry for your loss, and as others have said, think you are very brave.
