Horse Quencher - Feedback.

Yes and I'm afraid my horse is one of the ones they don't talk about in the advertising as he won't drink it!

I have to admit he is a nightmare away from home as he does not like to drink but this has not been any more successful than a plain bucket of water.

I have a friend whose horse will drink it, but we have found he will also drink extremely sloppy sugar beet which is much cheaper than Horse Quencher but does the same job. i.e. re-hydrates!

I think it is excellent and used it all through the snow in the winter to try and avoid impaction colic. I also carry it on the lorry. I would recommend trying the sachets though as my horse will only drink apple. It's also useful to let them eat a small amount as you put it in the bucket so they know there is a treat to be had! I don't feed speedibeet so would be a complete waste of money for me to use it to do the same thing as the sack would go off before I'd used more than a scoop!

Friend of mine was going to HOYS with a horse that was a swine for not drinking away from home and I told her about it after seeing it mentioned with glowing reports on here.

She got the variety pack to try beforehand so she knew which he preferred - he wouldn't touch any of them!

Mine arent too bad for drinking away from home but I did try some a couple of times to see if they would drink more - but they wouldnt touch it.

Like someone else has said there will always be some that it works for and some that it wont x

I have tried the sugar beet method but I only buy it in the winter, interesting feedback though, thank you.

I have bought 2 sample packs one of each, apple and mint.

So I'll try and see what happens.

I gave my boy some apple juice in his water, when he was not drinking enough [I think the water was just too cold as it was freezing in the stable], he liked it, also tried warm soaked sugar beet, he tried to eat the stuff at the bottom of the bucket!

Just to let you know there are more than two flavours. I think the apple and mint are the most common but they do licquorice and a couple of others. Just wish my horse liked them!

Personally my girl adores the apple HQ, as does her daughter, but they are good drinkers anyway. Been used in endurance in UK for about 2 years now. Some like it, but a few don't. Can't please everyone!

I would also suggest you try some old endurance tricks. Firsty, beet water. As easy as it sounds, extremely sloppy sugar beet so it is basically green water. Second, grass water, exactly the same but using grass nuts. Third, add some apple juice. Forth, Chunkily chop up some favourites such as apples, & put into beet water. This makes them 'bob' for the treats, & as they go for them they also take fluid on board.

All the above, don't expect just to try them at a couple of competitions & say it doesn't work. Get a different colour open container (trugs are brill), when horse has worked hard especially on a hot day, make up the solution so he associates that particular bucket with a tasty drink. Do it for weeks, so then at comps when the bucket appears he knows it will have a tasty drink in it. And yes, they can drink straight after exercise, endurance horses are even encouraged to drink during exercise, & at top level they will be cantering (up to 25kph on some tracks for hours.

My girl had never drunk at comps or lessons in the 6 years that I have had her until I gave her HQ!

I gave it to her at first in the stable and then away from home and its the first time ever she has drunk, she loves it. I have tried her on the mint and apple, they also do butterscotch I think. I would recommend it. Just buy a couple of sachets to try it out at home first.

My boy loves it! I've only tried him on apple and the mint one but I find it's a god send after work or when I can see he hasn't drank much from his buckets. Made up with warm water in winter it relives my worry about impact colic etc. I suppose it's as others have said...horses for courses ; )
