Hello! Here's my current dilemma:
This girl brought her horse to me and I've been giving her some SUPER beginner lessons. The horse has a background in jumping for sure, but I think she's been shown in other things as well. Bottom line is- she was like 'super horse' at one point in her life. When the girl (who is about 12 years old) brought her horse, Sofia, to me, she said that Sofia was kicking at her every time she asked her to do anything.
So, of course I did a little groundwork with Sofia and found that she was kicking out any time I asked her to move forward. I don't think this girl puts a whole lot of real training time into her. She mainly wanted a well trained horse to enjoy.
I finally figured out how to get her to move her feet while longeing (if she walked any slower, I think she'd fall over) so I guess movement is movement, right?
Then I try asking for a trot and she totally freezes up and goes into shut down mode.
I generally train natural-horsemanship style whereas I think Sofia was trained more traditionally so maybe it was the switch in mentality? Anyway, if you have anything to offer as to how I can get her moving her feet, that'd be great.
Thanks!
