Horse Retirement

Do you think it's true that some horses can't retire? I'm not talking about super high level competition horses or anything (though I'm not sure that's any different), but riding horses that have been used for light showing and eventing.

Someone I know is about to have their horse PTS instead of retiring it, as the horse "likes to work" and would be unhappy just at grass. Personally, I find this hard to believe, though I am trying my best to understand!

My own retired horse Inca will probably have to be PTS next week and I absolutely hate the prospect of having to play God with her life. But the fact is that we have given her a good 3 or 4 years of happy retirement where we have done everything to give her a comfortable and enjoyable end to her life. If I could keep her alive longer without her suffering, then I would.

What do you think? I agree that if a horse is suffering then ending its life is the right thing to do... but would you put a horse to sleep because you think it wouldn't like doing nothing?
