What a bunch of IDIOTS!!! some of those comments are pathetic...Horses riders dont pay road tax???!!! EXCUSE ME!! I drive a car therefore I pay Blinking road tax!!! Horses should be ridden in fields or bridle paths....Ok find me a field that isnt flooded, is level and isnt being built on and ideal to ride in and a bridle path where you dont have to ride on the road to get to it??!!!!! YOU CANT!!!!
This really anoys me...one guy even said put them in a horsebox to get where you want to ride...What and give you something else to whinge about??!!
I think her main concern was her horse but i would have gone straight to the bus company. the police would have done naff all if any of the recent posts are to go by
What stupid comments, makes my blood boil, I agree that she should've perhaps had someone either on foot or horse with her if it was the horse's first time out, but there is no excuse for the bus driver not stopping or any other cras for that matter. They were very lucky.
When you read comments such as those on the newspaper article, you wonder what hope there is.
I would love to ride on bridle (not bridal!) paths or round fields, but sadly there are NO bridle paths where I keep my horses and the farmers use every inch of their fields for crops. Thankfully our yard has off road hacking, otherwise I wouldn't hack at all.
It's just typical of the resentful attitude of an increasing section of society these days, sadly. No-one can have or do anything that the chavvy masses don't have/do.
The comments just show the total ignorance of some people . They need to read the Highway code .As for the idiot who implied the best use of a horse was for meat in France we all know how we would re-educate him !!!
OMG to some of those comments!!!!!! Its frightening how many ignorant drivers there are out there, I feel like printing it out and sticking it up at the yard where we have 3 teens who hack out with no hi viz gear and NO HATs!
And as for going out over fields, bridlepaths and woodlands - would'nt that be nice!!! Not a lot of yards have that option.
Think the woman should have phone the police though, before going to the papers.

I believe she had someone leading the horse with her:
"She said that since Prince was very young, she had done her best to make him aware of roads because she understands the importance of having a horse safe, and, on this occasion, he was being led by someone on a rope."
It frustrates me how ignorant so many road users are to the needs of horses. They just don't seem to understand how a horse could be scared of air brakes, or how it might get upset if you go to close behind them.
Isn't it frightening when you realise that so many people who hate you because you are riding a horse are out there on the roads? I used to work with a woman whose husband hit and killed a horse (luckily the rider survived). He couldn't care less about what he had done and felt only anger that the rider had let the accident happen!
I am not condoning the bus driver but for his air breaks to go off he must of been applying the breaks. Plus you have no control of the airbreaks letting the air out which is the noise. Then it says he pulled into the bus stop, so he can not of been going that fast if he was going to pull over in the bus stop any how.
Yes I know he could of been approaching fast enough for it to scare the horse & he should of checked on the rider & horse if OK & passed them wider than he did.
quotene guy even said put them in a horsebox to get where you want to ride...What and give you something else to whinge about??!! :quote
exactly, if the moron was stuck behind a horsebox it would take him even longer to get past!!
i like they way at least one person always brings up the road tax when it comes to horses on the road. i run a car, a jeep and a lorry so i pay 3 lots of road tax!
I agree to a certain extent k9h, and why did she not report this to Arriva first?
The comments from some of the morons after leave me with my jaw on the floor. Unbelievable. There needs to be more consideration on BOTH sides.

Very sorry, I read that wrong on the first occasion

It is very frightening IMO. Having read some of those comments I will fel more intimidated on the road than ever.
Idiots. All because they have to slow down for all of 5 seconds to overtake us. Tw@ts.
The thing that saddens me most about the anti horse brigade is that they are driving potential lethal weapons in the form of big metal boxes on wheels whilst us poor riders and horses are completely unprotected. It is a bit like the big kid in the playground picking on one of the tiny ones and feeling that they are completely justified in their actions.
I still don't understand why they hate horses so much. They never really explain that do they? Is it because we slow them down for a second or two whilst they overtake us? Is it because horses sometimes poo on the road? We obviously realise that horse poo is very different to dog poo, but maybe these people are convinced that they will go blind if they drive past some?
I don't see why road tax comes into it at all either since the majority of us adult horse riders will also be drivers and, therefore, paying our share of road tax. I just wish that one of the morons who think it is ok to pass horses so close that they clip our stirrup irons would tell us the reason WHY they feel the need. There again, none of them seem particularly intelligent so maybe they don't actually know the reason themselves?
Wow after reading all those comments it makes me really worried. I rode out today with my kids 12 &14 and a friend, as we often do. We mainly ride the miles of country lanes round us & mostly drivers are very understanding. It frightens the hell out of me to think so many drivers ovbiously hate horse riders. It really doesnt make me feel very safe using roads to ride out on.
Do these narrow minded drivers not realise that horses were actually on the roads before their precious cars? If it was one of those drivers on the young horse, they would expect some courtesy! And from the poor horses point of view those air breaks must have scared the sh1t out of it, if I was a horse they would scare me! The mental damage that must have been done to the poor fella is unimaginable. Drivers like this make my blood boil. I am now in the habit of taking down Reg plate numbers of inconsierate and downright dangerous drivers. I as a road user on my horse say thank you to cars that slow down, pull in if a car needs to go past on a single track road etc, I expect some courtesy back. That article just scares me, what is this world coming to..
That was a bit of a rant but I am glad to get that off my chest now!
What a set of stupid, uneducated people, I pay a crazy amount of road tax for my car.
I also have to pay a huge amount for my horses public liability insurance, so if people like them hit my horse on the road and try to sue me, my insurance company can deal with them.
*big deep breaths*
im dying to get logged on and post a comment what a lot of idiots!
horses pollute the atmosphere?!hello car fumes are just SLIGHTLY more polluting than horse ****, which is all just breakdown of grass etc and not harmful.
what IS the road tax arguement?!isnt road tax paid because of the maintainance needed because of the damage cars do to the surface?!what damage does a horse do to a road?!lol.
glad rider and horse are ok, there are some real idiots out there.
pedestrains are big hazards to drivers-they dont pay road tax either, therefore they shouldnt be allowed to cross the road?!
horses and cyclists have every right to go on the roads.i suspect given the choice almost all would prefere to be riding elsewhere because of idiots like that.
cant believe the bus driver didnt stop.i would DEFINATELY report it to the company if i was her.and then go to the papers if she got no joy.
we do sadly have to take young horses on the roads-we have to ride on them to get to the bridle paths etc and if we dont take them on the roads to get them used to cars, how can we help bombproof them?!probably idiots coming past fast and close are the reason some horses ARE spooky on the roads.you dont have to hit the horse to cause it harm-my friends mare got her tail caught in some idiots wing mirror because they drove too close and got dragged down the road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it takes FIVE SECONDS to pass wide and slow and most riders will give you a smile in thanks.
for gods sake wont people just be sensible and considerate for all road users, its a PUBLIC road, not just for CAR drivers!
The rider did herself no favours whatsoever in going straight to a newspaper.... she missed two crucial factors that all should know and follow.
1) If the bus "brushes your leg" ...it is without fail an injury rtc...reportable to the police and the insurance companies involved...it's also crucial it's reported to the bus company.... rider failed to report accident....insurance void!!!
2) Follow an incident involving a fall due to rtc thru the correct manner, call the police, report the incident, get the driver details or vehicle reg number and use it for the report.
The driver stopped in the bus stop...at which point either herself or her leader should have approached the driver for details. IF the driver did not stop...it becomes a "fail to stop rtc" a serious road traffic offence.... WHY THE FLAMIN HELL IS IT NOT DEALT WITH????
My opinion....this particular case does not help any of us when road riding, the view of mounted riders has once again been brought into disrepute....
Afraid if this was to ever happen... the above would be followed, then compensation sought, and all the other minor expenses.... then and only then should the matter be brought into the public domain....and the view would be one of ...danger caused to riders by road traffic..... a better opinion to be viewed by the public.
People like that are the reason that I dont hack my horse out anymore! I have had too many near misses on the road our farm is on, im just waiting for my friends yard to be built!
Do they think we can fly to our nearest birdleway?
I would love to not have to go near the road to be honest (like most riders!)!
People like that are idiots, and like many have said they hate us for hacking out - I get sworn at just for being on the road - how rude!!!!
Some worrying comments at the end of that article.
This isn't really relevant to the article, but thought some of you might be interested....
A few years ago, I did my HGV licence so I could drive bigger horseboxes. While having lessons, my instructor told me about a bus driver she had previously taught to drive an HGV. After 5 days of intensive training, he went off to do his HGV test. He failed on a "dangerous" point, meaning the test was terminated and he had to be collected by the instructor! He then re-took the test after further training and failed on a "serious" point (something like not checking mirrors before moving off).
He then gave up on getting his HGV licence and returned to his regular job of bus driving!!!
Now I would never stereotype and say "all bus drivers drive like idiots" but doesn't it make you wonder what standard of drivers bus companies are employing? Personally I steer well clear of all buses!
It really worries me that there are so many hateful people around. I can only feel sorry for them - what a miserable existence it must be to be filled with so much anger and hatred
I used to be in an area populated by this kind of driver - suburban - I used to get abuse hurled at me out of car windows, people beeping at me trying to scare the horse, trying to literally run me of the road (I always wear high-vis and wave and smile at all drivers). I've lost count of the times I've heard 'go back to the fields' 'where's your road tax' 'you're slowing me down, how dare you' comments. Thankfully now I've moved to a rural area where most drivers are considerate.
I really feel for those of you who aren't in a position to do that and worry about what things will be likein years to come. It seems no-one has any manners/respect anymore
