This year i am hoping to take my newfoundland out showing, so i need a few rugs. However i am a bit stuck at what size rug to get him. I am thinking around 3'3 in horse rug size as there is no possible way i am going to get him in a dog rug! What are your ideas? He is quite a big male already and is only 17 months old!

Protecting him from the rain and his slobber

I am confused, I do not understand why he needs protecting from the rain (especially as he is a water dog) or his slobber, you just clean him up the evening before a show and then treat him as normal again.
I have friends that show Gordon setters/Flat coats/chesapeakes/spaniels/terriers/newfies and I have shown terriers and lurchers all of the dogs are worked/swim/puddle jump/wade in muddy puddles and exercised more than the average pet dog and most have done well in the show ring. my lurcher bitch did very very well and I would only ever rub her down when we arrived at a show-I know your are dealing with a lot more of a different type of coat but I can honestly say I think you will possibly do more harm than good by putting a rug/coat on a heavily coated dog that struggles with the heat to start with.
Treat him like a dog first doing well at shows is just a sideline and only seems to happen if your face fits with pedigree showing.

Thanks for the advice I just read on another website that you need waterproofs for them but I will follow your advice. I am new to showing and am sorry for confusing you

may be best to speak to his breeder and get out to a few shows with them, from their point of view it is good if he does well so it would be nice if they could 'show you the ropes' and introduce you to a few people

I was hoping to go to a show to look what other people do before I go out as I don't really trust the breeder much. But again thanks for the advice I really appreciate it

Coming from a breed where people tend to "protect the coat" (ie poodles) I don't see the point. in all honesty, if it has a good coat it has a good coat, and good daily maintenance will be better than covering up what nature gave them. My bitch goes out in fields, gets muddy, gets washed and trimmed and rarely do I cover up her coat. I only ever do it on show day if it's minging out.

Well you can hardly carry him from the car into the show arena, so I can see exactly why you would want to keep him dry on a show day. My 25 inch minis 3' 3" rug would probably fit a dog beautifully, but I think it would be too small for a Newfoundland!
