Hi all,

Long absence from this forum but thought it was a great place to ask about Horse riding safaris and how best to carry phone or even a camera safety while on safari given I will probably want to access it easily to take a photo / video without dropping it.

All tips or recommendations welcome!

For long hacks at home I use a lanyard then drop the phone down the inside of my shirt, or into a bra strap (I have a small phone!). Means it's instantly to hand and I can't drop it. Just make sure it's a lanyard with a breakaway in the back of it in the very unlikely event that you get it caught up on a tree.

Oh you lucky thing. That is one holiday I would have loved to have done in my youth but couldn't afford it then. Now I have the money but am too old and stiff to do it. I hope you have a wonderful time. Please come on here and tell us about it and add some photos.

My daughter, who has been on lots of riding holidays, says she has used a waterproof pouch on a lanyard which she tucks inside her jacket but mainly just sticks her phone in a pocket. She says a wrist attachment is a must though in case she drops it.

This did worry me with the lanyard option - any breakaway model to recommend? Thanks so much !

If you can get a compact with a decent zoom I'd use that instead of phone. I had a bum bag but also a neck strap on the camera so I could shove it down the front of my t-shirt

Round your arm. Loads of holders available in the gym gear section and very tailored to brands, normally. I had one back in the day, I think it was velcroed on, but a buckle might be better if you’re riding hard.

I know shoving it down your bra is mentioned, but that’s not very secure and a friend of mine developed breast cancer where she used to shove her phone. Possibly coincidence, but I’d not put a phone down my bra, although again, back in the day, I did.

I went on a ranch holiday recently.

Rode with a bumbag so I could carry phone, lip salve and sunglasses which was invaluable.

You could get a wrist lanyard for your phone for when you get it out
Tbh, I didn't bother but was quite comfy riding with one hand so never felt I would drop the phone, even in gallop.

Being from South Africa and ridden through plenty of game reserves or simply the bush - we keep our phones in the pocket of our breeches like you would normally or a lanyard phone carry pouch that exposes the camera lens (else it doesn't take nice photos).

An aside - as you are going to be doing long day rides, make sure you wear the correct underwear, this is VERY important, else you will end up with very sore fanny. I recommend commando but if that doesn't work for you, do some longer rides at home in different pairs of knickers so you can see which works for you.

Only ever dared do this once. I’m in awe of those that can!

We have life venture cloth waist belts which I also wear when riding in UK in summer .
They go under ones clothes if needed and can hold money, passport, keys and card as well as phone.
