Hi All,

Can anyone tell me where I can find a horse sale locally to me. I am looking to buy a pony ie. Welsh A/B/C or a part bred - (not needed to be registered) I am happy to bring it on, or sort it out if it is in a mess - I have heard various stories on the Reading horse sales but I would like a little guidance please as to one that is easy to get to (I live in Hampshire) and dates of when they are. One in late June or July would be a good option for me.

Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance.

Google horse sales and you will soon find plenty to choose from. The biggest sales for welsh ponies are in Builth Wells. I am not sure why you are so set on buying from an Auction, you can easily buy welsh ponies from private sellers, or direct from the stud.

Hi Tracey,

Yes I could pick one up anywhere but I suppose I'd rather get one that desperately needs a good home, love and help that I can sort out, rather than buy one that is perfectly all ready done and ready to go ... if you know what I mean :) I don't have alot of money either so I'd rather put in the time and the work and pay a bit less.

I tried the google, it wasn't actually that clear - bar the fact there is one this weekend which is too soon, I can't find any info after that.

You would be far better supporting studs/private sellers than the "sales" that tend to support the dodgy dealers

You should not assume that horses in the sales are charity cases. I have a friend who breeds absolutely top class section C's. He sends his foals to the sales at Builth Wells if they have not sold privately because he does not want to keep them through the winter. The studs will all have foals that are not top class for showing, but still make good ponies and are sold at very sensible prices.

True, but as I originally said I don't have alot of money - and am certainly not paying some of the overpriced studs that are being advertised for their registered ponies. However, I am in a position to maybe afford something that may also benefit from my help and the love and support of my yard and my experience. The dealers will always find someone to sell to regardless of who/where and why.

So back to my "original" question of do we know when the next sales will be?

Yes Tracey I agree with you, I've bought from horse sales before some wonderful horses in my time - (we are going back over 20 years here though !!!!!) they are not all knackered/rspca cases/screwed up and needing help - hopefully I can find one that suits my need and if it is in need of a bit of care and or reschooling/backing/breaking I am more than happy to put this time in and give it a wonderful home in the meantime. I have owned an arabian stud myself for well over 10 years and am more than aware of the prices that some people can put on their stock - I would like to just find something cheap and cheerful that my partners little girl can eventually ride.

Should be simple huh ! :)

Reading sales is not bad, is it the second tuesday of the month or something? I understand what you are getting at- you want a cheap pony and would prefer to buy one that may otherwise go to a less than perfect home. You could try some of the welsh sales, again I'm not sure where/when they are but you would definately find something nice there. There used to be one in Henley-in-arden but I think that's been stopped now (usually frequented by our friend James Gray)- that was a good one to buy cheap "off the moors" ones.

Damn! You know I'm going to have to go now don't you?? I bought 2 lovely tbs from there several years ago, one 2yo by overbury who has turned into a super teenager's allrounder and is admired by many! Grrr....
