I've never had experience of this, but am considering sending a horse to one, if I cannot sell him.

WHY? I hear people say....

Well, being an AA, doesn't seem to attract a wide fan base....and I cannot afford to feed him through the next winter....I have him advertised, and still no-one seems really interested. At the risk of appearing to sell him 'too cheaply'....the market maybe the only choice. Sure, I'm aware I might not make much, but it's a case of 'one less mouth to feed'...as they say....

He ain't ready for the knackers yard yet...certainly not!

Can someone give me a run-down on how it works, if I have to take this as a last resort?

Well firstly if you dont want him ending up as burgers make sure you have him down as "not for slaughter" & secondly put a decent reserve on him. Personally i would drop the price of him & try & sell privately, its beyond me why people who have their horse advertised at say £1500 & cant sell, will then put it through the mart & take £400 for it...not that im saying you would do that of course, but it is one of those things that bug me. We bought a D colt for 28gn & then found his ad online for £400..bonkers!
Oh & when you say hes an AA...do you mean anglo arab, i always thought they were quite sought after....have you considered advertising him on Arabianlines (if ive got the wrong end of the stick i apologize lol). Just out of interest how old is he?

My sis did this as last resort horse didn't make reserve so she took it home. Had phone call on way home and sold same day for a lot more than top auction bid. I'd drop ur price and re do ur ad people are only just starting to look after a hard winter.

Would tend to agree, people are only now starting to look, no one with any sense took on a horse (or another one) over the winter, well I did but then she was free and I have no sense :)

Agree with both posts above.

I have seen lots of horses go through the auction selling at a fraction of what they are advertised for privately. Reduce the asking price, and wait a bit for the better weather. My experience is that people ring up about horses for sale as soon as the sun starts shinning, they dont bother much when its cold or raining.

Yes, he is an Anglo Arab, with registration cert too!

Up to date with all the usual things, and although 16, certainly NOT high mileage! full of the joys of spring!
I
I've got him up at £1,200 ono to include tack.....is that too much?? I had him up for £1,800 last spring....and guessed the lack of interest was due to being too high for his age! I don't sell horses, they tend to stay with me until their final breath....not so for this boy!

He would be a FAB happy hacker for anyone, and yes, he does jump too....

I was going to sell him LASt spring, but got little interest! a friend persuaded me to let her have him on loan and now has given him up due to financial constraints...not interested in another loan, as he might well come back again!

He's a beauty, and it's a shame....but such is life!

Dragonslayer he sounds lovely & i dont think 16 is that old, it certainly wouldnt put me off :) wish i had the pennies & the space myself, sadly loosing our grazing at the end of the month so any new additions are out of the picture for a while. Just a suggestion, but go & look on Arabianlines, they have a wanted section, you never know you might find someone on there who is perfect for him.

I would think at that price you should get some interest once the weather picks up. Maybe your ad is not really "selling" him. :)

I agree with the advice given :)

Put him on arabianlines with some nice photos and keep your price (you could put £1200 ONO) people are starting to look for horses again as the weather is improving. When I was looking for an arabian/PBA to buy, I went straight onto arabianlines and ended up not looking anywhere else because I found what I wanted there.
