hi all, just looking for opinions and experiences from those who have been to and bought from a horse auction?
have you found the sellers to be genuine majority of the time?
also how does it actually work?:oif you purchase a horse, are you expected to take it home there and then or do you have time to organise transport and collect from the yard?
any recommendations of good sales in england?
sorry for rambling post, of course pictures of auction purchases welcome:p

You normally get a catalogue (you have to request). Then circle what you are interested in and go and watch them in the ring, either lose or under saddle. You can buy some outside the ring before auction, dont ask dont get! Then they go to auction, the nice ones will sell (usually for more than they are worth if very nice) and those that dont sell you can always try and get a deal outside!

Not sure about england sales but cavan and gorsebridge are good!

As for genuine? You get regular sellers and buyers there. Depending on the sales people can be very desperate to sell what they have and so I would watch your back and be careful. There are usually vets to carry out vettings and such.

I know many people who have bought some horses deemed unrideable from sales, because they were cheep! You have to use your common sense and be sensible :)

thanks for your reply:)
as for requesting a catalogue, would that be done online?
and is it common practice for ridden horses to be ridden under saddle in the ring, or do people usually just go with loose regardless?

Unless its warrantied then its buyer beware.
You buy....you take it home that day.
Get a catalogue and study it.
Best sales are Brightwells IMO......very good and welfare is higher there than most other places.

Hi we have a local auction at Ashford . I wouldnt buy at one because I would be too worried . At ours the horse has to be vetted with 4 days I think. Some friends bought a TB mare 15 yrs old and it is a nightmare. They didnt have tack for first few days and then realised it couldnt be ridden but because it was over the limit there was no recourse. They contacted the previous owners and the auction house and 2 years later they are still looking after her and spending a fortune on an old crock.
On the other hand there are some cracking youngsters and the local studs just use it as an outlet.
