I'm moving my horses down the road to a new field. It's next the road and in the summer its fine, you can see them due to the hedge but now its winter and the leaves are gone they will be visable.

There is a track with a locked gate and a guy who lives in a caravan about 800m but on the other side of a big barn. The only thing its it wouldn't take a genius to work out that you can lead them around the back of the field and along a cultivate field and to the road. I worry about them being stolen with so much horse theft always on Facebook and the news.

I've been looking at alarms that u could fix to the gate and would hopefully work as a deterrent and also wake the guys dog in the caravan up.. does anybody have any other ideas?

They are all chipped too.. xxx

short of making sure they have a sign on the gate stating the horses are microchipped and freezemarked, and padlocking their rugs on them (rug theft is more common). then there is very little you can do. padlock the gate, put hingestops on the hinges to prevent the gate being lifted up on that end. Make sure the posts are metal, and not wooden and make sure you walk your fencing twice a day. Often theives come up- clear their getaway route and take what they want shortly after!

Are you friendly with the guy in the caravan? I think he would be your best form of security= by all means alarm your gate!!

also try not to draw attention to the fact there are horses there!

1. Sign on gate to read:
These horses are all microchipped and freeze marked.
No tack or valuables kept here. All rugs postcoded & locked on.
In case of emergency please call (insert 2 x mobile number here)

2. Padlock on gate - which is a heavy hasp type (not good for bolt cutters - but not so prone to freezing up)

3. Rape alarm, cheap & cheerful. Fix this to bottom of gate so if the gate is opened the pin is pulled & alarm goes off. Won't stop fences being cut, but if a nit does go through the main gate it will be set off. Not good to use if you are likely to forget tho :o

Hope it works out for you :)

Mine are 4 miles from home, nearest neighbour is quarter mile away - they HAVE heard the rape alarm on the gate tho one day I forgot it was there & set it off at 6am...:o
