Travels fine but clumps of hair come out on arrival? Now he has a bald patch? Can anyone recommend a robust tail guard? Currently using a premier equine one, does anyone have any suggestions?
I always put a tail bandage on as well as the pollypad cover that I use and this works for me, worth a try to add to your protection on the tail, others might have more ideas.
I agree with Ebonyallen. Bandage the tail (I have also bandaged over a piece of Gamgee sticking proud of the bandage to protect the very base of the tail) then a tailguard over that.
Hi, I had this problem with my cob, following an accident travelling, to the point he would rub his tail raw travelling. Tried bandages and all manner of tail guards and pads with no success.. What I found worked was acavello gel tail bandages, they stay in place really well. Its like a stretchy ventilated rubber and doesnt move. They are around £30 and you can buy them on ebay. I just keep a stock and when one gets damaged put a new one on underneath and use the top one to protect it. There is also a travel rug by comfortzone which has a padded tail piece and shoulders. It didnt work for my boy but its definitely worth a look as it is a really well made product. Hope this helps
I had one who used to sit on her tail in the trailer. We managed it with two tail bandages (top one taped), one of the velcro wrap around tail guards and then one of the old style tie-up tail guard's over the top. If I had the problem these days then I'd def give the gel bandages a go
ETA if you can fit a tail bar like the Ifors had so that she can lean her bum on that rather than on the ramp which is presumably where she's leaning it, that would sort it. Mine used to rub hers in my old Sinclair but when we went in a friend's Ifor she couldn't get the tail and the ramp to make contact because of the bar. Perhaps someone could fit one for you?
