Hello everyone! I've been looking for a horse share for the past couple months and I've got a viewing for a horse coming up next week. I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about setting up a contract for a share? I know that making a contract with the owner is a sensible thing to do, I'm just not very sure how to go about it!

Could anyone give me any advice on how to make a contract or what to include in it? Thanks alot!

The owner should really produce the contract so a good start point is to ask them about it. If they don't want one (and they should!) then you are not going to be able to force one on them.

If there isn't one on the BHS website I can send you the one I used - but basically how much is paid when, which days. Any required chores / care etc. Anything not permitted. I shared out a PC Competition pony for about 10 years until his retirement so I had a fair bit of experience on what we needed to put in contracts!

There are templates online that you can review - as well as horse bloggers who pick apart the 'legal-ese' within the boilerplate contracts. It's sensible to have an idea of what is standard contract inclusion, and what is a red flag.

I think I just googled something like "horse share contract" and found one that looked fairly straightforward and went with that. No idea if it is legally binding but I think it is useful to help with clarity between the two parties.
