HORSE SLAUGHTER IN THE BRITISH PRESS (also in sb)

I don't think the article gives horse owners a bad name. I think horse owners who casually send their horses on for slaughter when they are no longer useful give horse owners a bad name.

I dont think this happens really - people tend to send the horses to slaughter for a reason, and outgrowing them is usually not it. You usually make more money buy selling them

I for one would rather see a horse shot than neglected.

Whos to say that pony hasnt seriously injured a child!?!
Although I am loathe to say this, they do have a point regarding injured horses.
A local racehorse trainer had one rear over backwards and break a back leg in the yard not so long ago. He called the local meat man and the horse was loaded and sent off to Potter's.
That is sickening imo, and Potter's should have taken the step of reporting him.

Well, we could always increase their suffering and pack them into lorries and transport them live to - say - Italy, before slaughtering them

Animal Aid should be ashamed of themselves. This is blatant spin aimed at members of the public who know little or nothing about horses and horse owners.

Yes of course its distressing to realise that some end up at Potters but to present this photo (which doesnt show anything wrong) and then associate it with some child getting bored or outgrowing their precious pet is a bit sick IMO.

I have written a reply on the article. Frankly I am not surprised that Animal Aid are propagating such piffle - it just shocks me that newspapers are so gullible.

agreed.....

having watched the whole of the 9 minute video on Animal Aid's webby, there isnt anything on there that is ethically or moraly wrong.....

the poor guy who has been "spied" on going about his legitamate business in his capacity of work, is a guy who actually owns 3 well looked after equines!!!

typical Daily Mail tosh.

I do find the fact they are using a long barrelled rifle one handed is rediculous and extremely dangerous! Why are they not using a humane killer????
Sadly we must face upto the fact that Abbatoirs are needed whether we agree in them or not!

I saw it & thought it was a shame , but far better than shipping live equines abroad for the meat market or leaving an unwanted animal to fend for itself in a bare field .

I personally wouldn't take a horse to the knackers & would rather have the horse put down at home , but that's my choice & I thought the article was a bit over the top .

Totally agree. Do Animal Aid really think that parents of kids who've got bored of their ponies send them to be slaughtered? Of course not. They sell them.

What does Animal Aid think happens to ponies that need to be PTS? Not everyone can afford or wants to use humane injection, and it's much better that the pony gets PTS here than be shipped hundreds of miles alive to the Continent.
