I know its a horrible topic but I am currently writing an essay on horse slaughter, I was wondering if anyone would know where I could get facts from such as the number of horses slaughtered each year in the UK etc?

The slaughter houses will keep records, might be worth asking them directly.

This might help, the FSA released stats on this after the horse meat scandal http://www.food.gov.uk/enforcement/monitoring/horse-meat/#.UiJJFMu9KK0

Go and visit Potters if you can, it will give you a much clearer insight. They'll be very happy to talk to you about numbers as well

No help with UK stats, but I believe that the numbers in Ireland have gone from approx. 2,000 in 2006 to over 10,000 in 2012. This is not a bad thing IMO. Hopefully people will reduce the numbers of foals produced accordingly.

I think the FSA must only count those fit for human consumption. There is a European article from 2006 which suggests that 20,000 is the average head of horse slaughtered in the UK.
