Just looking for opinions really...

Horse is slowly coming back into work after 12months off due to illness and then lack of facilities. He is 5yrs 8months. He has been barefoot for 7months and has been foot sore on stony ground but improved once working on different types of terrain.

Over the last few weeks I have noticed when I first start to lunge he looks very slightly short on his front left and when on the left rein, hardly noticeable really but to me I can see a difference. After around 5 minutes he looks fine. I have kept an eye on it and carried on with the same work to see if he comes worse or better. He hasn't got worse. I work him 3 times a week, which consists of 30min long rein/lunging which he does all paces but plenty of walking and yielding. For the last 10-15mins I get on and walk around (slowly building up to more work less lunging). He is turned out for an hour everyday and also uses the walker and in hand walks out.

He doesn't wear boots in the arena but have done a few times to see if theres a difference and there is. He strides out nicely from the beginning

Feet wise they look good (to me anyway) I thought it could be thrush making him feel tender but they don't smell and are nice and solid.

Can any one share any experiences? Thinking about it now I should of taken pictures.

Feed wise he is fed alpha oil, fast fibre, linseed, brewers yeast and magnesium. He has ad lib haylage 24/7

If the boots change him, then he's probably got a sore sole or frog. He may have bruised it on frozen mud recently, he may have an abscess brewing. If it's only on one side then I doubt you have much to worry about and I would continue to work him if he is comfortable to keep the blood moving.

TBH, with this wet weather its probably an abcess going/coming/subclinical. they are rife atm. Failing that you may have to keep going with boots or shoe in front.

Thanks guys.. will see how he goes on over next few weeks.

I dont plan to re shoe him anytime soon so if needs be he can be booted but he only looks short for the first 5/10mins then looks fine. will see how we go..

This might sound really stupid and naive, but could it not be that he is a little unbalanced through being young and having been out of work?

I have noticed that my 5 year old is ever so slightly short on the same leg when on the same rein in fact. I had planned to keep an eye to see if it improves as he starts to get more used to the work. I thought all horses had one rein better than the other, especially to start with?..

If he's better in boots then I'd agree with CPTrayes - sensitive sole or frog. Not all horses get on with alphalpha - could you try swapping it to something free of both alphalpha and molasses?

What other chaffs are out there that are high fibre, calories but low sugar/starch? He's on alpha oil as he 's prone to gastric ulcers and alpha is good for this.

That's a point smanf.. He could be slightly unbalanced and although he's 5 he very much a baby so could be growing up and changing shape.. I hope so anyway
