Hello,
firstly i haven't posted much before so apologies if this is in the wrong section!
I was just wondering whether anybody could offer any explanations/advice as to why my horse is constantly slipping during roadwork.
She's an Irish cob and admittedly isn't the best balanced, she's quite heavy on the hand and is rather lazy but she slips constantly whilst going downhill (and sometimes when going up as well with her back hooves.)
When riding downhill obviously I sit back however I am unsure whether to give her her head completely when she slips in order for her to use her neck to balance or try and support her more? when she slips with her front hooves she doesn't worry, just carries on but it's when her hind hooves slip and her both her hind legs almost go from underneath her she panics and gets faster which in turn causes her to slip more.
Sometimes it is just the road surface however it also happens when i ride her to the edge of the road to try and get grip on the grit/mud on the sides or if there is any in the middle. I was just wondering whether there was anything I could do rider wise and whether her slipping with her back legs is due to her being a bit lazy dragging them and not pushing up through her hind quarters or is this is just something I have to try and cope with?
thank-you. :)
xx

get your farrier to put in road nails, they work a treat, H used to be like that - not any more. He feel more confident on roads now thanks to the road nails.

My Farrier melts a product called Road Sure onto my horses shoes, just a blob on one spot on each back shoe as she used to slip like yours. Not anymore, its great stuff and shes much more confident going down hill.

Always have road nails for the irish knobber , very hilly down here in sunny ( rainny ) cornwall . Maybe also try and get some schooling in over poles so she learns to pick up her feet and help herself balance - just a thought x
