Horse slipping when hacking

My pony has been slipping a bit when hacking on the roads, i know roads are slippy but i'm sure its happening more than it used to (typical horsey paranoia!). However it doesn't happen enough to make a BIG issue out of it. She has had her shoes on for 4-5 weeks, could they be too thin? Her feet seem to have grown quite quickly, if they are longer than normal would this be the reason. Some body suggested that it may be because she is weak behind but she is quite fit at the moment. Could it be because I am too heavy for her? I know that there are a lot of posts about being to heavy but how do you know if you actually are?

Any thoughts, opinions, experiances would be greatly appreciated.

TBH it might be any of those things, but it might be none of them! The horse I ride is a cob type so there is no way I am too heavy for him, but he constantly slips on his hind feet when we are out hacking more than any other horse I have ever ridden

I asked the farrier to change the way he was shod, which he did, but the horse still slips. I have just come to the conclusion that in his case he is lazy behind

Ask your farrier for some road nails - they have a tungsten core, which doesn't wear as quickly as the steel, so the nails always are prominent and therefore give grip.
Or, if you prefer, ask for the farrier to fit road studs...

without knowing what road surface you have near you, I know that there is one surface that's like a skate rink! Can't remember what it's called but used to have it near my old stables......is she like it on different surfaces?

No its only on roads. We do have some of that new dark stuff which is really slippy but she also slips a little bit on some rougher stuff, although it is usually on hills. I think I might go down the road nails route. I'm just paranoid that i'm too big for her and when stuff like this happens I think arrrgghh this is the proof that I am.

No, honestly, try the road nails or road studs first. My farrier was surprised when I said A (the horse I ride) was slipping as he already put road nails in, but he went to road studs then and STILL no improvement

We just go very slowly and carefully down hills now!

I have road studs in all of mine, fixed ones in the pony as he doesn't compete and removable ones in the others so we can change them for larger studs when needed. I really notice the difference without and, after an incident last year when my horse (I hadn't noticed) had lost one stud, he slipped behind, crossing his back legs and crashed down sideways on the road resulting in a broken collar bone for moi!

Thankfully he was fine just a bit shaken but i make sure they have them in now as don't want a repeat performance. Better to be safe then sorry in my opinion.

Near me, the council recently resurfaced a fast stretch of road. Shortly after there was a speight of accidents. One lad was killed and a handfull hurt. It turns out that they had used a different grade or type of tarmac which had lower level of grip but was cheaper!! Could it be that?

It could be a road surfce called SMA Stone Mastic Asphalt. SMA is a dense bituen surface with a high stone content that gives it a smooth surface texture. Find out from the Highways Department of your County Council if they have used this material o the roads you use.

As above get your farrier to put road nails on your horses rear feet and also always hack out with knee pads on your horses front feet just in case your horse comes down on the road. Jeffreys makes some nice ones.
