One of my horses has started blowing his nose a lot, you know that noise they sometimes make after going into trot? (Sorry don't know the technical name for it!)

He is doing it a fair amount, both in the field and ridden, and is head shaking a little too.

He has no history of head shaking, and this started on Sunday after I rode him in the morning.

It's like he actually has something up his nose. He did get bitten on his muzzle by a horse fly while on our ride, I wonder if it could be this?

Should I give it some time or would you be getting a vet out to stick a camera up his nose??

Mine too, I thought I was going to have to get off him yesterday at one point as he was doing it so hard, but after he was finished he didn't do it again for the rest of the ride.
Haven't seen him do it in field though, only when he starts work...

He is doing it in the field too, like every 2 minutes. He isn't head shaking in the field, just blowing his nose, even when he is just grazing.

Anyone got any ideas?

It could well be a simple pollen allergy.

I did think this, but what would cause it to come on so suddenly at the very end of June? Surely it would have started in Spring?

Or do you get different pollens at different times of the year? (sorry I'm not expert!)

Pollen counts vary, and much is in accordance with the weather (as well as the time of year).

The pollen count recently has been high, as weather has been warm and dry. Today will be low, as it's cool and cloudy.

Ok, but he has not suffered from pollen allergies before this year, but I am guessing it is something he could acquire.

I will see if there is a difference in him tonight after the cool day then.

Yes, I would imagine it could be.

But, it could also be the symptoms of something more serious. So keep an eye - and if you continue to be worried, have a chat with the vet.

I'm wondering what symptoms of something to worry about might be? Mine tends to have discharge coming from one nostril, either clear or white...?

Mine had a sinus mass, among the 1st symptoms were constantly snorting & blowing out through his nose when grazing. These masses aren't common but I still think I'd get a vet to check. He had the mass treated but still does this snorting when grazing all summer but the surgeries for the mass worsened the very slight pollen head shaking problem he already had so I assume that it's now just down to the pollen as it stops in winter.

Did your horse have any other symptoms?

Did it come on suddenly or gradually?

Just wondering, thanks

Not many, he doesn't adhere to text book symptoms unfortunately! I noticed this snorting & once or twice had a drip of pink watery fluid from nostril but was otherwise fine. I think he started showing these symptoms around the may/June time,a couple of months later he developed a facial distortion & we started investigating,he had the odd day where he didn't seem himself but generally fine. By the time he was referred for more investigation it was around September time & I saw him head pressing a couple of times. He was unusual as with the problem he had he should've shown more signs earlier & possibly earlier investigation could've meant the mass didn't get as extensive as it did.
