Horse Starting Rider Weight

Hi all,

Just after some advice from more experienced horse breakers and trainers than myself :). I bought a stockhorse quarter horse mare when she was 6 months and her mature height was expected to reach 15hh. shes now 3yrs old and 13/13.1hh and will be lucky to reach 14hh. Im a bigger girl (83kg/ 13 stone), so she will be too small for me but my question is - Would it be cruel to break her in myself if i work in small amounts? In my mind it would be but i was just wondering about other peoples experiences and opinions. Please be considerate when replying, this is a heartbreaking situation as she is very special to me.

Below is a link to compare our sizes. This photo was taken when i hoped on her for literally less that 7 seconds a couple days ago. She was checked for soreness both before and after. and was mounted carefully without excess strain pulling on her back. She obviously noticed i was there but showed no signs of being unhappy or in pain- so please dont just say i was being cruel by getting on.

She still looks immature, could you do some long reining rather tban ride for next year to see if she fills out as a 4 year old?
 
At the moment, yes, I think you're too big and heavy for her, because she's so little and immature at the moment. She looks like she's got a lot of bulking out to do.

I think in a years time she'll be ok carrying you (just bear in mind she'll need to build up back strength and stamina so will need a very slow and gradual intro to carrying you) but right now I would only have a tiny, lightweight rider on her, anf even then I'd not be doing much. I'm tall and slim and only about 10st (64kg) but I wouldn't be willing to ride her at the moment.
 
This horse is a long way off being able to carry ANY rider in terms of her own physical development. Forget about riding her for 6 months and see what you've got early summer.
