Horse stuck on gate !

Yes, hope he recovered quickly.

I'm afraid I can't help but think this is the usual fire brigade over kill! It must have taken long enough for the Press to get there, let alone the fire brigade with the lifting machines. Undo the chain and lever up the heel of the gate (long pole or car jack?) and lift it off it's hinges. Job done. But no publicity of course.

JFTD's Darach (Daemon) tried to jump a steel gate at around 6 months. He all but managed it, but got a hind leg caught between the two top rails and just hung there. Quickly sorted by pulling the leg sideways. He limped for a couple of hours but was fine after. But the gate did not come off so easily. I had to drive over it several times with the Land Rover to get it straight and then weld up the crack! Highland ponies are tough.

I hope Jester is ok, I think he may belong to a member on here, hopefully if it is who I think she will come on and tell us he is fine.

My old mare tried to jump out of her field and got stuck on the gate. She stood quietly with a pile of hay while she was rescued - all we did was got four strong blokes to take the gate off its hinges. I asked everyone to step aside in case she panicked, but she picked her way over the gate like a ballerina and just ended up with a small swelling and minor scratches on her undercarriage.

Lucky horse - she missed the supporting strut by less than twelve inches!

Oh bless...poor thing and glad there was a positive conclusion to this. They really can get themselves into all sorts of trouble can't they!!

Ooft. Jazz did a similar one while I was on holiday, tried to jump a 5 bar wooden gate from a standstill, didn't quite make it and snapped the top rail. According to my mum, who was there, they were all expecting him to freak out but he just hung there "like a pound of mince" until they got over to him and pulled the broken bar out of the way. He then managed to pull himself back over the gate.

Mum elected not to tell me about it until I got home ...

Happened to me twice. A pony I loaned when I was young... we just slid her off sideways. My last horse did this too. I just told him to get back off again and he did by rearing and turning. His size may have helped but you can slide a horse off a gate quite easily.... distressing for all concerned the first time but just stay calm and try to either get horse to rear off or slide off towards the hinges or else you will have trouble with gate bending.

Also to add that he is at the schooling yard so I wasn't there. Got a phone call after to say what he had done etc but knew nothing about the fire engines etc til I went up there today!!!!

Embarrassing though it is....that horse is mine :o :o
And he is fine...a little stiff but ok. He does have a swelling on his belly which vet is keeping an eye on but all in all he is ok :D

I guessed he was your Jester but didn't want to put it just in case I was wrong or that he had been badly hurt despite the successful rescue. I am pleased he is fine if a little stiff, hopefully he wont be trying that again.

Blimey SLH....I'm glad you didn't find out about the fire rescue by seeing the article as that would have been quite a shock.

Really glad he is relatively ok. Bless him xx

Glad he is OK SLH, mine went up and over a barbed wire fence and got stuck halfway had to dismantle fence round him, he just stood there like a good'un though

My horse did the exact same thing a couple of years ago (and then again last year but with his stable door). The gate is still at my old yard with a nice coloured cob sized dent in it and is more like a V shape than gate shape.

Luckily he was just bruised and grazed. Unfortunately I didn't get help from the fire brigade, just one very big man walking his dog! Although I'm grateful to him as getting a 550kg beached horse off a gate is near impossible on your own!

Aw, bless him. Hope he's fully recovered from his ordeal now and well done to the fire brigade for getting him off with minimal injury. He's very handsome, BTW.

My asbo fat boy did the same thing from a standstill but fortunately cleared the gate and won much respect on the yard for his jumping ability which he'd kept secret until then. Daft sod. :)

Aye. Hasn't stopped him jumping gates either...

Since the initial swelling has gone down it has been noticeable that he has a lump near his stifle. Vet confirmed this is a ruptured muscle and he is scheduled for surgery on Sept 22nd. This means he is off games til after Xmas which is a bummer but not a big deal when I think he could have killed himself :/

Really sorry to hear he will need surgery, healing vibes. Our now graded stallion suddenly decided to jump out of his loose box, aged one year. Fortunately we were there when he got stuck. We put hay bales under his hind legs and outside the box and he hoisted him over.

Why do we have horses?

healing vibes ((()))

Fingers crossed that surgery goes well! Silly boy! Well done to the services though, always there when you need them. Sending lots of healing vibes xx

All best vibes from here, too. Hope that he's not too uncomfortable whilst he's waiting for his op. Is he on box rest?

Just as well that it was a weld mesh gate, wasn't it. Must have helped to prevent him getting his legs caught up in it. Keep intending to replace our metal farm gates with weld mesh, may just action that sooner....

Hi no he isn't on box rest but is in a smallish field section. Keeping him still would not be good for the swelling etc so keeping him moving is best according to the vet.
He is fine in himself and quite frankly appears to be wondering what all the fuss was about :o
He definitely deserves his new nickname El Thicko :D
Thanks for all the good wishes :)

Is that why he is upside down in your avatar???
