my mum brought my horse in at 3.40 and gave her her tea at about 4. she seemed happy to come in and eager for her tea. then at 4.50 my mum said that she was quite sweaty on both sides & got someone to check her, who said that it may be because...

today was the first day that mares & geldings went out together (usually its just mares alone, then just geldings alone in another field, but winter at our yard means that one day per week is a mixed day).
the person my mum asked said she may have been chased around by geldings and her tummy might be bloated/gassy as the grass is better than what shes been on in the summer field.

she is on 3 haynets of hay a day and isn't really keen on them. so she may be bored of her hay?

she has had a drink and is eating hay on and off. but hasn't poo'd yet. she seems to go into a bit of a trance like shes really sleepy then jerks her head like she realises that shes falling asleep!

she usually sweats near her flank because last year she had an operation to remove two granulosa cell tumours which resulted in also removing an ovary, and sweat glands so its not uncommon for her to sweat there.

am i worrying over nothing? :/

Is she showing any other signs of something being amiss? How's her heart rate and breathing? It seems a bit odd and unsettling that one day a week the horses are all chucked in together, can't you opt out of this?

she is either to warm in her rug or:

listen to any gurgling sounds in the gut.
check her temp
check her pulse
check her breathing
she needs to pass some poo or she could be compacted which will lead to colic.

IF IN DOUBT CALL THE VET.
3 haynets seems allot
all ours are together all the time mares and geldings. seems weired to mix them one day only , causes squabbles:).

I would think she has probably just got a bit stressed and should settle in a while, it is still fairly mild and she has got a full coat.

Why would any yard take the risk of putting two groups of horses together on one day a week, it seems to be totally irresponsible and asking for an accident.

jumpthemoon; she seems normal apart from the sleepiness but she has done that before ? and no :/ its the yard rules, she has to stay in 3 days a week (but can go in a turnout pen for an hour a day which isn't really good enough.

leviathan; her temp, and breathing is okay, mum is checking her pulse now. is 3 haynets too much? our vet recommended to give her that amount..
yeah i know it is kind of weird, its not mandatory to do so but she is kept in on a sunday because it is the geldings day, and so i thought it'd be unfair to keep her in monday too when its mixed, mum isn't leaving till she's had a poo

be positive; yeah she does still have her full coat, she isn't usually clipped .. and i know i don't really agree with it either :/

Depends how much is in each haynet ;)

If its unusual for her, then I would keep a close eye on her for a bit. Have you checked her over for injury?

I am afraid I am a bit horrified at the yard's policy, only mixing groups of horses for one day a week sounds like a complete recipe for disaster. I'd rather my horse stayed in on that day, I think.

oh :/ sorry, i probably seem stupid, i thought her hay was an alright amount..

yeah she has been checked over & no sight of injuries thank god! and hmm :/ well the days for mares are tuesday, thursday and saturday (also monday if you want the mixed day) i don't really think its enough to be honest

Was she sweating when she came in or did it start once she was in? I cant help either way but it may help others to figure it out

Numpty question but is there a chance someone has ridden her while you werent around?

welshd; my mum said she was sweaty after she took the rugs off after she had finished dinner (she was in a purple cooler & a red lightweight rug with a neck). and i don't think so, :S

maisey; i don't know to be honest :/ during summer they have their own fields, mares in one, geldings in another. then in winter them fields close, and the spare field opens, so mares go in some days, geldings the others. :/

Tbh I would be looking for another yard. Very restricted turnout AND chucking the mares and geldings out together one day a week is asking for an injury in my opinion imho. If the yard doesnt have the land for winter turnout, it should cut down the number of liveries imho.
Can't help whats wrong with your horse, hope shes okay. You could ring the vet and ask for advise, I do it all the time with my sheep!

If the rug didnt come off until she had eaten, with a neck cover on she was probably just too hot.
I dont think you are giving too much hay, she looks a lightweight type and is spending a lot of time in her stable, only going out 3/4 times a week is not good for them really, so I would give her plenty of hay unless she gets too fat.

I'd say she's had quite a stressful day, and got too warm in her rug. Keep an eye on her for colic symptoms just in case though.

I have to also mention that the yards turnout policy is shocking, and isn't normal.
How big is the winter paddock, and how many horses in total share it? Can they not split this with fencing, or have the horses turned out daily and safely in shifts?

My youngster once had colic and his only sign was quiet and random sweating. He wasn't sweaty when he came in and 5 mins later was really sweaty up his neck and around his legs.
